Bigha land. We have a Naib there but we cannot trust him and give him the burden of land settlement. We are looking for a suitable person. will you go

Kan used to deceive people many times. What does Avinash say! I have been roaming the streets of Calcutta for a year in search of a job, and the offer of that job came to me completely unsolicited at the invitation of tea?

However, standards must be maintained. With great restraint I pressed my mind and said like indifferent - O! Well, I'll think about it. Are you there tomorrow?

Avinash is a very open and cheerful person. He said - leave the thoughts. I am writing a letter to my father today. We are looking for a reliable person. We don't want bribed servants of the zamindari—because they are often thieves. Educated and intelligent people like you are needed there. Jungle-Mahal we will settle with new subjects. Thirty thousand bighas forest. Can such a responsible work be left to anyone? I don't talk to you today, I know your horoscope. You agree—I am writing to father and bringing the appointment letter

It is not necessary to say more about how I got the job. Because the purpose of this story is completely independent. To summarize – two weeks after the tea invitation at Avinash's house, I took my belongings one day to B. N. W. I got down at a small railway station. winter solstice A thick shadow fell on the vast wilderness, far away. In the distance, there is a little fog on the top of the forest. The pea-fields on either side of the railway line, the sweet scent of fresh peas in the cool evening air, made me think that the life I was about to begin would be lonely, as lonely as this winter's evening, as lonely as this dull desert and that distant blue forest. .

I traveled about fifteen or sixteen kross in a bullock cart all night - within six the blankets, rags, etc. brought from Calcutta got wet in the winter - who knew such a terrible winter in these regions! When the sun rises in the morning, I am still walking. I saw that the nature of the land had changed—the natural scenery had taken on a different shape—no farms, no large slums—only small forests, sometimes thick, sometimes thin, sometimes open wilderness, but no crops were grown in them.

I reached Kachari at ten o'clock. About ten to fifteen bighas of land were cleared in the jungle, and a few thatched houses, made of wood, bamboo, and thatch of the jungle itself—a fence of dry grass and a thin stipple of forest grass, covered with earth.

The houses were newly built, and the smell of fresh-cut hay, half-ripe grass and bamboo smelled upon entering the house. I inquired and found out where the kachari used to be on the other side of the forest, but due to waterlogging there in winter, this house has been newly built, because there is a spring nearby so there is no water problem here.

I have spent most of my life in Calcutta. I can't imagine a different life with friends, the library, the theater, movies, music - I can't imagine a place so lonely, where I came to work for a few bucks.

no Day after day goes by, I see the sun rise in the eastern sky on the top of the distant mountains and forests, and in the evening, I see the sun sinking, turning the entire forest and long grass forest tops in vermilion color - the eleven hour long day of winter in between, it is as if it is completely empty, what do you do? That was the first time it was a big problem for me. If you work, you can do a lot, but I am a complete newcomer, I still can't understand the language of the people here, I can't do any distribution of work, I spend my days sitting in my room, reading some books that I brought with me. The people in Kachari are absolute barbarians, they do not understand me, nor do I understand them well. The first ten days spent in difficulty! How many times I thought that I don't need a job, it's better to stay in Calcutta with half food than to suffocate and die here. What mistake have I made at Avinash's request by coming to this uninhabited forest, this life is not for me.

While sitting in my room at night thinking about all this, the old Muhuri Gostha Chakraborty of Kachari pushed the door of the room and entered. This is the only person with whom I can speak Bengali and survive. Gosthababu has been here for at least seventeen-eighteen years. A house in a village near Banpash station in Burdwan district. I said, sit down Gosthababu -

Gostha Babu sat on another chair. He said - I came to tell you one thing quietly, don't trust any people here. This is not Bengali country. People are all big

bad-

-- The people of Bangladesh are all very good, not so Gosthababu-

Her – I don't know her anymore, manager baby. I came here for the first time because of that sadness and the persecution of malaria. It used to be a lot of trouble when I first came, I used to gasp in this jungle - it's like this nowadays, the country is far away, I can't go to work in Purnia or Patna and stay for more than two or three days.

I looked at Gosthababu's face - what does he say!

I asked - why can't you stay? Are you panting for the forest?

Gazi Gosthababu looked at me and smiled a little. He said, that's right, manager baby. You will understand too. Newly arrived from Calcutta, mind is flying for Calcutta, you are also young. Stay here for a while. Then you will see

- What will I see?

- The forest will find you. A crowd of people will not like any noise. That's what happened to me sir, I went to Munger last month on litigation work - just wondering when I will get out of here.

I thought to myself, Lord, save me from that predicament. his
