I recently wrote this for NYC Midnight's 500-word Fiction Challenge. This was my first round submission, and I placed in the top 10 in my group to move on to the second round! This was definitely a good exercise for me. For anyone who isn't familiar, the challenge divides participants into different groups where you're assigned a genre, an action, and an object that you must incorporate into a story that is no more than 500 words. My genre was horror, action was breathing in second hand smoke, and object was a glass jar. There's definitely a lot of things I'd like to change about this little story, but I'm leaving it as is because I'm pretty proud of the fact that I placed with it.

Winner's Gap
It started with a reel. A quick fan poll from an online viral newcomer that had just surpassed 1 million followers asking if anyone had a day they could not account for, not related to drugs or alcohol. She sat on her signature pink Muppet fur chair, custom blue cat-eared headset glowing in the neon lighting of her room and talked about how hers had happened right before her online success and wondering if anyone else had a similar tale.

Chef's Special. Content Warning.
Written for Paul's challenge, which you can read about here: ******************************************** The restaurant was quiet, eerily so. After the string of murders occurring in this small podunk town, no one wanted to be out after dusk. "The Meat Mutilator," as they called the killer, was still on the loose and considered armed and very dangerous. Making matters more terrifying, no one had lived to give a description of the cold-blooded killer.

Chapter 1: An incident in the woods The voices in my head shattered the still silence. My instincts urged me to run β get as far away as I could. On my paltry savings, however, I would never get far. βMy life is over,β I muttered in helpless surrender.

3 Great Places of Folk Horror
It is safe to say that there are many different places that implore us to investigate further. For example, places such as Salem in the U.S.A which has a history concerning witch hunts and the Tower of London which is probably haunted by everyone and their second cousin. But, when we investigate folk horror, we look at the urban legends that surround places, however particular and the stories that have inspired and changed them over the years.
