Stumbling Stones

The Unyielding Path of Conviction

By Franz·CabotPublished 2 days ago 2 min read

Once upon a time, a father and his son embarked on a journey to the city, leading their humble donkey by its halter. As they ambled along the dusty path, laughter echoed from the roadside, as passersby chided them for their foolishness: "What simpletons! With a donkey at your disposal, yet you choose to walk!"

Swayed by the jeers, the father instructed his son to mount the donkey. They continued their trek, only to be met with further scorn: "Behold the unfilial son, allowing his own father to trudge along in toil!" The words stung, and the father quickly dismounted his son, taking his place atop the beast.

But the road of judgment is never smooth. Soon enough, another voice rose above the din: "Cruel indeed is this father, uncaring if his child should collapse from exhaustion!" With haste, the father invited his son to join him on the donkey's back, hoping to quell the criticism.

Yet, the chorus of disapproval persisted. This time, it was aghast at the sight of two riders burdening the frail animal: "Have they no mercy? To crush such a scrawny creature beneath their weight!" Abandoning all hope of pleasing the crowd, the pair scrambled off the donkey and devised an alternative plan. They bound the donkey's legs and hoisted it onto a makeshift pole, carrying it like a sedan chair.

Tragedy struck as they crossed a bridge, for the discomfort of the donkey led to a struggle that sent it plummeting into the river below. The current seized the poor creature, and it drowned in the murky depths.

The moral of this tale resonates through the ages: one must possess the fortitude of conviction and the discernment to distinguish right from wrong, lest one becomes a puppet dancing to the whims of public opinion. Do not dwell within the confines of others' perceptions; instead, stride forth on your own path, think with your own mind.

And so, we are reminded that the environment, with all its challenges, remains constant. It is the individual who must adapt, who must strive to transform adversity into opportunity. For it is in overcoming these obstacles that true wisdom and resilience are found.
