He saw her standing on the beach and thought he'd never seen anyone so beautiful staring pensively out to sea. She suddenly turned towards him, with the most ravishing smile. He knew he wanted to see that smile every morning when he woke up and last thing at night before he slept.

But he was already unhappily married and couldn't divorce, otherwise he would lose everything.

Over the next few months, Charisse became an obsession for him. He yearned to be her lover. His wife noticed the change in him, how happy he was, and how evasive whenever she caught his eye. She determined to find out the reason.

She began monitoring his movements, eventually discovering that he was stealthily romancing the new neighbour, Charisse, a few doors down. She befriended the neighbour, without letting on she was his wife. They got on so well, Charisse accepted an invitation to stay a night at her house while her husband was away.

By this time he had hatched a plan to have the new woman, the wife's money, and be rid of his wife. Some time after midnight that night, he stealthily entered the house, crept into their bedroom and saw the outline of his wife in the dark. He approached her, took a spare pillow and brutally smothered her.

As he turned to leave, feeling a sense of relief, his wife switched on the light. She had heard a noise and had come to see if Charisse was all right.
