Meatballs are awesome, but sliders are even better.

Italian Meatball Sliders are made with Italian seasoned ground meat, drenched with a homemade red sauce, placed on a sweet white roll, and topped with mozzarella cheese.

These delicious sliders go well with chips or a salad. You can also eat them plain, with rice, or in spaghetti. They are great as leftovers. Try some for lunch the next day.

You can use whatever type of ground meat you'd like. Venison, beef, chicken, and turkey work wonderfully. You can also use more than one meat. Pork sausage is a tasty addition to any of those other meats.

Italian Meatball Sliders Recipe

Ingredients:

Meatballs

  • 2 pounds of ground meat (I used venison)
  • 1/2 cup Italian breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 onion, diced (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon of dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground black pepper

Sauce

  • 28 ounces of crushed tomatoes in puree
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon of dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder

Bread and Cheese

  • 12 slider rolls, split
  • 12 slices of deli-style mozzarella cheese

Getting It Done:

  1. Make the sauce first. Heat a large kettle to medium-high heat. Add the tomatoes, salt, black pepper, oregano, basil, onion powder, and garlic powder.
  2. Heat until it boils, which should be only a few minutes. Then turn the heat to low and let it simmer.
  3. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  4. Now make the meatballs. Mix the venison, Italian breadcrumbs, salt, black pepper, oregano, basil, onion powder, garlic powder, milk, minced garlic, and diced onions together in a large bowl.
  5. Take a heaping tablespoon of the mixture and roll it into a ball. Try to make 12 meatballs with the same amount of meat. Slightly flatten the meatballs.
  6. Place the meatballs in a 9″x13″ casserole dish. Pour the homemade sauce over the meatballs and bake at 375°F for about 20 minutes or until done.
  7. Split the slider rolls, cut the cheese diagonally, and put 1/2 of a piece of mozzarella on the bottom.
  8. Top with a meatball, a couple of tablespoons of sauce, the other half of the mozzarella cheese, and then the top of the roll.
  9. Let's eat!

The meatball and sauce will be hot and will warm the cheese. However, you can heat the slider for about 7-10 seconds in the microwave if needed. You can also assemble these, place them on a cookie sheet, and bake them in the oven for a few minutes, just long enough to melt the cheese and toast the bread.

For added flavor, you can mix butter with Italian seasoning and brush the tops of the slider rolls with it. Let it soak in or toast it in. It's delicious!
