Darius's Flight
The charge of the Companion Cavalry, spearheaded by Alexander himself, struck the Persian center with devastating force. The Macedonian cavalry broke through the Persian lines, causing chaos and confusion among the Persian troops. Darius, witnessing the breach and fearing for his life, decided to flee the battlefield. His flight demoralized the Persian forces, leading to a collapse in their ranks.
With Darius in retreat, the Persian army began to disintegrate. The Macedonian phalanx and infantry, sensing victory, pressed their advantage, cutting down the fleeing Persians. The once formidable Persian army was now in full rout, with many soldiers abandoning their weapons and attempting to escape.
