Her American Sister
It was 1992. She was 17, a high-caste girl from a good family. I was barely 22 and fresh from a liberal arts college in Oregon. In Peace Corps training we learned that Nepalese women are demure, that they laugh quietly and keep their eyes downcast.

Food fuels community across the globe
Stephanie Sang (Madagascar, 2016–18) How did food help you connect to your community abroad? Cooking meals together was a wonderful way to spend time and connect with my host family, especially in the beginning when my language was limited. Food preparation on the southeastern coast of Madagascar involves fetching water to wash the vegetables and dishes, as well as cutting and gathering dry wood for the fire. Helping with those chores was a small way I could show gratitude for my host family's generosity.

#ShePower
There are a variety of challenges that exist for youth in rural areas such the students of Mlindazwe High School in Mgotjane, Eswatini. The rural nature of these communities in conjunction with a high school curriculum that does not include coursework in the arts, results in a lack of exposure to art, creative expression, education and employment opportunities in the creative arts.

The right fit at the right time
Becoming a Peace Corps Volunteer is an opportunity I never could have imagined at this point in my professional and personal life, but the timing is actually just right. My children are adults. I am well-established in my career, and I have a breadth of knowledge, experience, and a unique skillset that I did not have to offer when I first considered the Peace Corps in my 20s. Serving in the Peace Corps is a calling that has been lingering on my bucket list since I turned 25. Now, several decades later, I am fulfilling that dream as a Peace Corps Response Volunteer on a one-year assignment in the Andean region of Colombia.

Very special simple gifts: my people in Georgia
Serving in the Peace Corps was among my lifelong goals and dreams. But multiple chapters of life happened when I became an adult – college, a year of (literally) traveling around the world, graduate school, marriage, family, career, community life, more graduate school, and quasi-retirement. I had to be patient, given that the opportunity didn’t arrive until 2017, when I was more than 60 years young and my husband of 33 years gave me an extraordinary gift.

United in Preventing Violence Against Women and Girls
When women and girls participate in all aspects of life without the fear of violence, we unlock their ability to become catalysts for progress. Around the world, local communities work hand-in-hand with Peace Corps Volunteers to prevent gender-based violence. We do that by addressing the root causes of violence, empowering community members to tackle power imbalances and enhance their skills for sustainable behavior change.
