Politics, Education, and Good Timing
Just yesterday, I scrolled past yet another post of one of my previous coworkers saying that they were leaving the classroom. This year is not for the faint hearted. Those who soldier on in these conditions are beyond amazing. Many educators have decided that this year is the year to put their mental and physical health first, something that is frowned upon heavily by society – even amongst purported “self- care” options. There is no massage that can fix unrealistic expectations, overpopulated classrooms, and countless hours of unpaid planning time. Before the pandemic, teaching was difficult. During the first stages of the pandemic, teaching was a whirlwind of learning new skills and striking a different type of balance. Now, over two years into the pandemic, the weight continues to pile on.

Pressure
It’s 12:34am and I cannot sleep. I suddenly feel like punching a brick wall repeatedly until my hands bleed. I’m not sure what happened. Just earlier today I was smiling and laughing with my newest students at my part time teaching position. Even three hours ago, I cheerfully taught my adult ESL class – that I scheduled and planned on my own, to a kind and receptive couple. Now, there is a ball in my chest and my jaw is still clenched.

Why I Don't Hate Abuela from Encanto
Warning - This article includes spoilers of Disney's Encanto. Disney's Encanto has become an obsession in my house. We watch the movie and or listen to the soundtrack at least once a day. The catchy tunes and relatable storyline provide fun for the whole family. We all love Mirabel, Antonio, and who could forget Uncle Bruno. We sympathize with Isabella and Luisa, who are dealing with the pressures of appearing strong and perfect when the reality is quite the opposite. Both of Mirabel’s parents are amazing. We love the healing power of Julieta and the goofy yet authentic support of Agustin. The passionate relationship between a Pepa and Felix captivated us. Their older children, Dolores and Camilo stole the show, even with minimal screen time. The only bone of contention within our home and the general audience at large is with Abuela.

Back to School
Back to School: Day 1 I started teaching in person yesterday, October 19, 2020. My district decided that certain English learners (those at the beginning levels) and students receiving special education services would start their in-person learning at last month’s board meeting. Before Monday, all kinds of thoughts passed through my mind. I was worried about safety, adolescent management, and keeping them occupied for a continuous 3-hour block. At the same time, my excitement grew as the day approached. I couldn’t wait to see students in person. Looking at black screens all day gets tired, quickly.

New Year New Me: Not Quite
2020 has been a crazy year for the WHOLE entire world, myself included. I know that I am so ready for this year to be over! I’ve seen so many social media posts regarding the new year ranging from: “declare your intentions” to “walk in really slowly and don’t touch anything.” This year I am going to take a distinct approach to the upcoming year. My plan is to just be authentic and confident, as well as to live my life abundantly.

My Wellness Goal
Last year was quite an emotional rollercoaster. This year started off with the same level of intensity. The general uncertainty of political and health related issues made me realize one fundamental fact: I do not control much. However, what I can control is myself, and to a lesser extent, my home environment. Armed with this knowledge, I have resolved to improve myself to the best of my ability. I plan to become more healthy in 2021 than I was in 2020. I am a big fan of setting goals that are SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and on a timeline.
