Intelligent Conversation
The girl who wore Mary Janes and the guy who hated girls who wore Mary Janes sat at tables across from each other at the Blue Note Cafe. Molly, the girl played with her coffee stirrer, drowning pieces of melting sugar into the lightly colored mixture of vanilla and cream. The guy, who shortened his name to Will because his parents were obsessed with Charlotte's Web and named him after Wilbur, the pig, scribbled in a drawing pad. The ink from his pen dripping onto the clean edged paper. He lifted his hand, ink smearing, feeding into his lifeline. Slow and steady, like his pulse dulled by the mediocrity of life.

Spots Mary Jo Putney loved her new house. It wasn’t just the large kitchen window overlooking Lake Timpoochee, although she loved the view. It wasn’t the well-manicured yards, although her neighbors were always outside toiling away in perfect gardens, smiling, and waving. It wasn’t even the wrap around porch with tiny yellow flowers growing on vines, although their fragrant sweetness drew her outside like a bee to honey. It was the simple fact that 222 Grayson Point was all hers.

Darkest Devotion The night was much too hot for the white cloak she wore, so she unlaced it. A cascade of silk fell at her bare feet. She kicked it aside and continued down the spiral staircase. With every step she took, the ground grew hotter. In the shadows, flames licked at the walls, lighting up the cryptic cavern.
