The Last Real Snow Day
Charlotte glanced out the window at the snowflakes piling up under the night sky. She had just finished reading a story to her nephew's boy, Arthur, and tucked him into bed. He drifted to sleep as the snow blanketed the lawn. Charlotte was staying at her nephew Joe's house while Joe and his wife Lauren drove to a distant city for a conference on climate change.

Eighteen-year-old Pearl Taylor stood by the single window pane of the tenement apartment, gazing across the dark courtyard at the third floor room directly across from her. BETH'S VIEW SUMMER OF 2020 The outside world was unknown to her, but she would see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. Blue polyester! Cellophane and thrust into hand- I smile thankfully. AFTER MY MOM AND I MOVED TO PENNSYLVANIA IN THE 90's AND BEGAN ATTENDING A SMALL CHURCH, WELL-MEANING PEOPLE WOULD GIFT US WITH VINYL GOSPEL ALBUMS THEY PRODUCED THEMSELVES DECADES AGO...ONES WE SECRETLY REFERRED TO AS "GUYS IN PALE BLUE POLYESTER SUITS." WE LEARNED TO SMILE AND SAY "THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR SINGING TALENT!"
