Suckerpunch. Content Warning.
Nothing says dead better than a hole through your stomach. Inspector Abina “Abby” Muller knelt over the corpse. The victim was no older than twenty four, laid neatly on a sofa at the Cherry Hill motel. She had silver blonde hair just like hers, and most of her body had gone gray.

Glenmore Witches. Runner-Up in the Under a Spell Challenge. Top Story - October 2023. Content Warning.
“Ego ignis sum… Ego ignis sum…” Ava whispered the words over and over. A mantra for the rolling cypher glyphs that shined bright green on the screen in front of her and into her synthetic eyes.

The Slayer
Vorr nudged a loose plate into place as he made his way through the many gangways that led to the colony’s command deck. Alarms blared, and the rhythmic flashes of emergency lighting was all that lit the darkened corridors of his besieged home. It seemed another Kerr’var fleet had found its way to their moon, the dull thumps of plasmavore fire shaking the half flesh half metal walls and platforms surrounding him. His living symbiont armor growled in complaint and dug its hundreds of hooked legs deep into his spine. The pain was immediate, mitigated only by a beeping device on his chest that sent minute surges of energy through his veins, suppressing the creature’s protestations. It was unlike his armor to rebel in this way, a bad omen.

The Lone Wolf. Top Story - December 2022.
Heavy droplets of rain fell as a sudden storm ravaged the colony of Japre. People rushed inside their homes, their children, wives, husbands, and parents in tow. One man stood alone in a field on the outskirts of the colony, looking to his crop of underberries before the rain washed them all away. The fickle plants were the only thing that could grow on the planet’s muddy surface. Storms raged on and on, providing only brief respites in between outpour after outpour of heavy rain. It was the last sowing of the season, he had to make it work.

A New Dawn
My hands shook with anticipation. The forest was dark, and the last breaths of light from my lamp trickled through the spindly fingers of towering pines. It seemed they wouldn’t tolerate it, at least not while the sun remained unsummoned. I held my breath against the void. This was my journey to take after all, my burden as was my brother’s before me. A shadow of doubt crept into the depths of my mind. What if I fail as Devon did? The thought made my jaw clench. It had been a year since he left for his journey and when the sun hadn’t peeked over the mountains the next day the whole village knew he had failed. I took a moment to master myself, reciting the litanies of calming as I took my first steps into the mist.
