Tired and Toned Arms: Black Women and Their Part Time Jobs
A couple days ago I was balls deep into doing my hair before work. I started at 11:23, and I had work at 5, so basically I had to make sure I was out of here by 4. I was attempting to put the smallest possible twists in my hair, and I had convinced myself that I had done it before in 3 hours. I had done it before, but the twists were bigger, and my hair was much shorter.

"Growing Up Sucks"
I’m getting older, and things are as they usually do, becoming more difficult than they were as a kid. I’ve got to do my taxes (AHHH) and save money, and be much more responsible than I would have previously been. That’s all fine and good to me, but no one told me that maturing was the part that would take the most energy.

My Underdog Story
“She won’t even make it to 8.” said a high school mean girl. She was one of the mean girls that was popular, but wasn’t the really fashionable one. She just had athletic talents, and everyone seemed to like her, despite her being constantly rude for no reason. It was 2:16 pm on a Friday, and I was sitting with my back against the dirty green and blue padded walls of the school gym. She was talking about me, loud enough for me to hear. We had only ever exchanged two sentences to each other, and from that she grew such hatred for me. I was looking around before I heard, and when I did, my eyes dropped to the floor, an ugly yellow tint, with an uneven layer of floor lacquer. At first I let this get to me.

Space Buns: The Erasure of Women's History and BIPOC Culture. Top Story - July 2023.
“I love when you put space buns in your hair! They are always so cute!”. I heard this quite a bit in high school. When my hair got long enough after shaving it, I sported the space buns look often. Even as I got older, I still put the two buns on the side of my head, even adding strands of hair on the sides to give me a Katara of the Southern Watertribe esque look. The last time I wore these buns was just as recent as a few months ago, and I got the same Space buns compliment from a coworker. But I didn’t know why they were called that, space buns, and I didn’t really care to know.

My Favorite Singer Made Me Cry, "All Because I Liked A Boy
In the summer of 2022, I was having an amazing time. I was working on my portfolio for art school, excited to be doing what I love. I was also having fun spending all my free time with a “friend” I had reconnected with some months prior. You know the type, that one friend that people always suspect you’re dating and then you say “omg no we are just friends!!”. I was in the clouds, though the conscious part of me wouldn’t admit the reason that that was the case.

The Head of The All Powerful. Content Warning.
I sit on the bed, with Kayla my youngest sister parked between my legs. A familiar scene is taking place: a long yellow tooth comb, a large container of green Eco Style gel, and the small formations of hair about the dining room, ready to be gathered up into the humongous army of fallen ones. It is just about 95 degrees as I do my sister’s hair. As are most 6 year olds, she is terribly inquisitive, and to add to it, she's just had three lollipops and a cookie. So the questions come out like wildfire. “Yes” “no” “well it depends on what it is used for” and “because it just does” are usually sufficient answers for her simple questions, but then she asks something that I wouldn’t have ever expected.

The Heavy Space
Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. The nervous beats, overcoming one's body, that feeling of fear corroding your insides whole, while externally frozen in fear. The shrieking sound so deafening, that it nearly sounds exactly like the silence, that’s always bound to come. I sometimes wonder, if we all screamed at full loudness all at once, would it sound just like our silence?
