The Circuit
He had a feeling that something important was just at the periphery of his perception. A bit of knowledge, the lingering adrenaline of a traumatic event. He could feel it in his heart that beat just a few steps too quickly and in the cold sweat that crawled across his back and shoulders.

Tracks of Destiny
Day 58 It has been two years since my crew and I stepped from our landing pod and embarked on a brand new mission. And I mean brand new in the rawest form possible. This was something mankind had never before attempted. For two years we were successful. Mars was officially colonized! If anyone from home is reading this, do me a favor. Forget about the glamour of colonizing another planet and see things instead how I see them now. It has been nearly three years since my feet have touched the soil of the earth which gave me life. Two months alone since the explosive decompression of our mess hall where all crew, save my unlucky ass, were, at the time. I say unlucky because they had it easy. They never knew what happened. They never had to see their only friends frozen and sprawled over the surface of a lifeless and unforgiving planet. They didn’t have to fight for survival alone with their wretched thoughts. They didn’t have to say what I am about to. My food is gone, has been for a week. My daily water ration of three teaspoons has run out this morning. I will die. Soon I will join my friends as another decoration in this gruesome landscape. May no person ever have to feel the desperation and terror I do now. With much sadness that I will never get to see my home again, or hold close those people who I love, I sign off for the final time.

But for Aladron
There weren't always dragons in the valley. Before Aladron there wasn’t much of anything in our little dent between the Great Mountains. I still remember the day they came in all its vivid detail; all I have to do is close my eyes and I'm right back where it all began.

Ever Kept
The metal is cold in my hands. The place in my chest where a heart beats is colder. Do I still have a heart? I have the locket. It's in the shape of a heart. I scoot a bit closer to the fire, squinting at the spear of light reflecting off the locket's polished gold surface. I start to open it, but my eyes cloud. I don't want to see what's inside. I want to see who is inside. I want them here, and seeing the pathetically small picture inside the locket will only serve to remind me that they aren't. In a fit, I yank it away from my neck, snapping the golden chain. I squeeze it so tightly, my knuckles turn white. I can't take it any longer. I flip the locket open, and pull it so close to my face that the glass fogs up from my breath.
