Ranking Buffy Big Bads
Buffy the Vampire Slayer fought many demons, vampires and forces of darkness but there was a particular “big bad” for each season. Some were actually bad and a few were just kind of a nuisance, so we are ranking them. Since we have finished discussing Buffy the Vampire Slayer season by season I thought that we would rank all of the Buffy “big bads”. Eventually might rank the Scoobies as well but let’s just do the bad guys for now.

Ranking Franchises
While not every film needs to be a franchise there are some incredible stories that simply require it. Franchises do several things in terms of recognizability, obviously more films generally equals more money but generally speaking it also means more fleshed out content. Now for the purposes of this list we are defining a franchise as any IP with three films or more. We will be ranking them in terms of quality and I will not be taking notes. I will not be including the MCU for reasons of I want to keep this list to franchises that have 1 continuous story, though the MCU has a level of interconnectivity it most certainly does not do that.

Best Directors of All Time
When talking about film we have to talk about the people that make films possible. One of the most important elements of film is the direction. The director is responsible for essentially coordinating every other element in film. They have to take the words on the page and bring them to life for everyone in the production and for the audience. So who are some of the best directors of all time? Well there are plenty but we are going to narrow it down to 10. The criteria being how many movies they directed, quality level of said films, influence of style and recognizability. Other than that I don’t think that this list is going to be in any particular order.

9-1-1
9-1-1 is not a good show. I just want to be really clear because over the last month I have binged now 6 seasons of this show and it's not because the writing is brilliant, or even adequate. The storylines and cases are truly batshit and not in a soap opera way, so it's completely unjustifiable. However the character development and interpersonal relationships are not just good but likable, this makes the show watchable and enjoyable. Friendly reminder that I am here for gay firefighters and once I am caught up to the current season I will probably not be continuing with this show.

MCU Rewatch
As you may know my husband and I are rewatching all 32 MCU movies. Starting at the very beginning and going through in original release order we are watching all of the Marvel movies in release order. We have gotten through the first two Iron Man movies and now we have the other origin stories for the members of the big 3 of the MCU, Captain America and Thor. As origin stories go they differ pretty greatly but they both serve their purpose in the context of the greater cinematic universe. We are almost towards the end of phase 1 with these movies so we also get to talk about how they laid the groundwork for what’s to come.

9-1-1
Season 4 of 9-1-1 seemed to do slightly better at the actual storylines. They were definitely still ridiculous but there was no random intense arc in the middle of the season. That said the end of the season drama felt rushed and incomplete. We are starting season 5 with 9-1-1 on the fritz. Cell phone providers are apparently sending random calls and sending random alerts. This obviously starts the season off in an exciting way for our favorite first responders.

Sex and the City
Carrie is the worst part of Sex and the City, but Charlotte and the other girls are definitely who we all watch and rewatch the show for. So I am doing an article for each of the girls highlighting all the reasons that they are amazing. Charlotte is one of my favorites, she is elegant, smart and very sweet. She is also a little neurotic but in a super adorable way. She is the traditional friend who does a great job of balancing out Samantha.

Ranking Characters
Everyone has their favorite Sex and the City girl. The one you claim as yours. We all also have our favorite boyfriends, and we definitely have our least favorite characters. So we are going to rank the Sex and the City characters, the women obviously and the corresponding boyfriends. I will also be including a small subcategory for where Stanford should fit in.

Sex and the City
We ended season 2 with Big being engaged to another woman and Carrie being a little nuts about it. Miranda and Steve realize that being just friends is a little harder than they thought and Charlotte and Samantha continue to be the life of this show. We have a lot of horrible Carrie moments coming up in this next season so I suppose we should just get started. Here is season 3 of Sex and the City.

Tropes and Tricks
Will they, won’t they is a classic media trope that when used well can captivate audiences for years on end. The problem with framing any stories around with this trope is that once a writer chooses to actually get the main characters together the show quality generally suffers. If too much hype, tension or story is built up around the central relationship then everything falls apart when they finally get together. On the other hand there are a handful of shows where after the will they, won’t they couple gets together the show quality stays the same, or in even rarer cases, increases. We are going to talk about both and what makes a good use of the will they, won’t they trope.

Character Development
Redemption arcs are a common character device for writers to use in pretty much all genres of writing. Whether it be drama, fantasy or adventure there is sure to be a redemption arc for someone. Some are done not so well (Snape), and some are done very well. Those are the stories we are going to talk about. We know that I am very passionate about character driven stories and redemption arcs are a huge part of that. So here is a list of characters I think have the best character development of all time. Some of these aren’t necessarily redemption arcs but they do demonstrate incredible development and drastic positive changes.

Streaming Services
Streaming services have changed a lot about how television is both made and consumed. From shorter seasons, to harder renewals, streaming has its pros and cons. And though I still firmly believe that writers have more creative freedom and story quality is better overall with streaming services there are several things about the streaming model that need to be changed in order for working conditions for creatives to improve AND for consumer experience to be better. We are in an era where streaming services are struggling, they are bundling across owners and basically setting us back to cable anyway.
