Nine-year-old Ruth woke with a start as the horn of the train blared three times. "Hyawushuh," she blabbered. Rubbing the sleep from her eyes and dried tears from her cheeks, she found herself in a comfortable leather seat of a compartment aboard a train that clanged and clattered along the tracks.

Cetus
Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. When I lay down for bed, I swear I can still hear them. The pitiful, heart-clenching screams of the ones we sacrifice. Before that airlock door opens and their breath is sucked from their lungs as they are ripped into the darkness. I always watch them shrinking into the distant stars. I chant their names in my head like a mantra. It is the least I can do.

Bananas In the backroom of a health foods grocery store Dave labors at air stacking banana boxes. Taking dozens of them off the delivery pallet, removing their cardboard lid, then stagger stacking them onto the storage racks, sweating into his Covid protective mask. He freezes in place after lifting the last lid, staring into the box confusedly as over a dozen portraits of Benjamin Franklin stare back, with the expression of a disappointed grandfather. Along the bank of the Platt River, outside the center of Downtown Denver, beneath a twinkling night sky, Alex carefully lays his black leather journal open to the page with his suicide note, laying pebbles on it to hold it open. Then he clicks back the hammer of his revolver and sticks the barrel in his mouth. The taste of the metal incites a silent battle in his mind. Phrases of despair and doubt clash shields with hopes and dreams.

The sun always seems to shine brightly on Sun Valley Memory care. The cloudy days, which are few and far between, are easily forgotten, and swiftly replaced by sweet sunshine. The hum of chatter from the lobby and cafeteria fade as Lily Tanaka is guided into one of the care facilities lounging rooms which have full-length windows looking out into a colorful floral garden abuzz with bees and hummingbirds.
