Nerd, Geek, or What?

This Old Lady is Not Either or Any…

I am not a nerd, not a turd, not third, just looking at a word here. I needed help and have signed up for a couple sessions with a tech person and still don’t feel like I am there. All is not at a loss, just maybe an app that cost, and I’m feeling lost, I just tossed, my hat in the ring, I’m teaching a class I sing. Well, not sing, just Native American culture class is what I bring.

Learned D2L, well, I can’t say I’m there yet, can’t say I’ll get there, I bet. I’m 67, and I have plans for heaven, in the not-too-distant future, I can learn this I tell myself; I can capture, technology is a tough one for me, I just can’t see, how my grandchildren do it. Oh shit, or is that offensive? Maybe a bit.

I am glad I can type, and I can skype, keyboarding is the correct term, at least there is no more perm. A lot has happened in my day and age, doesn’t make me a sage. I hear “who cares”? Okay, please no stares or the other kind of stairs, just hoping for some shares.

Somedays I wish I was just a bit of a nerd and could sing like a bird. Instead of being just an old woman, with no nerd ability, unable to sing, just an old human.

I have been able to keep up throughout my career. It was dictation, shorthand, typing, and then there was word, excel, publisher, and so many others, I sneer.

And now, just too many to know, and remember, any who. And someone says what browser do you have, and I say, Google chrome, Microsoft edge and Firefox, don’t you?

Do you use zoom or teams? Both and Facebook Live and others, then screams, that come out of me and no wonder, is it any wonder, that it can be overwhelming at times? I don’t have as much trouble with rhymes, as I do with all the technology, and I have less trouble with biology and cosmology.

My son taught at Brown, my daughter in law is a programmer, my youngest is a networker and websites are easy for him. “Mom, there is a program for that”. I say, what a brat!! My daughter has been known to say to me, “Mom, a monkey could do that!” I stopped asking them for help with anything except maybe a cat, a hat, or a tat.

Nerd, is that like a Geek? How about a Dork? Nerd is smart. Geek is a social designation, that is easy to spot. Dork is not a compliment, although some may think they are the same, they are not.

The Geek Squad are computer people. Making them the ones to call when you have a problem with your computer. My grandson is a nerd, and he took his first programming class at 12 or 13. That is what cemented him as a nerd I thought. He doesn’t know everything about computers although, he can probably figure most things out though. He’s into spending lots of time on the computer, thinking he will make a game that will make him a ton of money someday. He is really smart and his brother is really into art, so I could see them team up and make a fun, good looking game that will make them both money one day.

In the meantime, what about grandma? I mean really, or how about Ma? Technology is something that maybe once would have been easier for me to do. All I can say now is I will have to keep my appointments with a tech guy like some of you!

Your grandson's enthusiasm for programming and game development is inspiring, and who knows, maybe you'll discover your own passion or niche within the realm of technology. And if not, that's perfectly fine too! Embrace your strengths and continue to explore the world in your own unique way.
