The readers

What should be asked and what should be wanted?

By Jamal GreenPublished 3 months ago 3 min read

I find myself asking one main question when writing what do the readers want and what exact type of content are they looking for?

Sometimes while writing we tend to forget who we are writing for and what interest the readers. The readers shall always come first as a writer shall have consideration for the readers' interest. We also forget how important the readers are.

When you have a broad audience of readers it can become difficult for you to satisfy their interest at times. Some readers although are picky when deciding what content to read and what topics interest them. Once a piece of content is read you want to retain the readers and keep them guessing and wondering what other content you will put out next.

It can be difficult to keep up with the readers interest as it always changes. During the first phase it is important to get to know and understand your readers, by studying their interest, wants, preferences and hints. Under-standing what content readers spend time on reading. Find out what the readers prefer over what they are least interested in. Learn the sites that are mostly visited and what times of the day the readers visit them.

The second phase is building engagement, this phase involves you narrowing down what type of readers you are targeting. In order for this phase to be effective you need to first establish a strong presence for the readers. The important thing to note is there is certain content that your readers will look to consume, as a writer you need to define what this content is. Some readers may prefer short form or long form content, but the best readers are those that prefer both. Readers that prefer to consume a wide variety of content tend to engage more than once with your content.

The final phase is the retention phase, during this phase is when you want to follow up with your readers. Provide feedback to create the external connections outside of the websites your content is published on. Learning what social and or communication platforms your readers use is vital to not only keep in contact with your readers but to retain them. Readers want to also see that you show interest in the type of content they consume on the platforms they also use. The external engagement you can develop and establish with readers will create loyal readers. You want your readers to consume, share, react to your content. When readers share your content on social platforms, the use of this action can attract new readers and can spark an interest and increase engagement.

Remember the readers aren't your enemies they are your friends, and you should be there's too. We can work together to bridge the gap between writers and readers. While it is important for readers to engage in your content, you as the writer have to show the readers why should they trust you and what is unique about your content. Writers and readers can both share similar interest in content that they consume. Writers and readers can align, and both share similar opinions about potential content that can be of interest for both parties. When you understand your readers, you know who your audience is.

Don't be a stranger to your readers, don't be afraid let them know who you really are and allow your readers to find your content easily through platforms your readers favor and use.

It is important for us to understand our audience that we are writing for which is our readers. Always remember, readers get first priority.
