The Waterways of the Mekong Delta, My Hometown
The Waterways of Southern Vietnam
Exploring the memories hidden behind old photographs during the days spent at home due to the pandemic, I suddenly found myself yearning for adventures from those early summer days. With lesson plans, assignments, and work set aside, I decided to capture the feelings from my past trip to the Mekong Delta.
Having only known this land through books, literature, and movies, I had never set foot in the Mekong Delta. I was excitedly awaiting the day to explore the South like a five-year-old child eagerly awaiting a gift. Sitting on the bus, watching clouds over the central provinces, the Tiền River swirled along with the afternoon breeze. The river was vast and different from the gentle, small rivers of the central region. The sound of the wind and the boat's engine mingled with the local guide's voice. The boat headed towards Thới Sơn islet. Sitting on the vast river, I felt eager and thrilled each time the boat rocked with the water. The Rạch Miễu bridge loomed in the distance, stretching like a steel ribbon connecting the two banks, cutting across the vast picture of water. Thinking of this legendary bridge, I recalled folk songs, poems, and stories about the Mekong Delta's rivers.
The boat docked, and tourists disembarked onto the islet, immersing themselves in the unique Southern culture, enjoying fruits and tài tử music. The sweet, soft singing spread through the orchards, leaving me with sweet memories. Our next trip took us to the coconut land across the Tiền Giang River. For the first time, I tasted the mild coconut wine and fried river fish on a plate, finding it quite strange.
Leaving Mỹ Tho, we headed towards Cần Thơ, where the Quang Trung Bridge stands as a highlight in the picturesque waterway of the Mekong Delta. The vibrant and beautiful night scene of the river city became unforgettable, especially on luxury cruises on the Hậu Giang River. My wife was happy as her birthday was celebrated on the shimmering deck of the cruise.
We ended our journey in Cà Mau, the southernmost point of the country. I sat down to take a picture and embraced the landmark 0001 at Đất Mũi - the southern tip of Vietnam. The joy was akin to reaching Everest's peak when facing the open sea. Leaving Cà Mau, we shared stories about our dreamy journeys and cherished the youthful moments amid the Southern waterways.
