One of the fastest-growing financial and cultural hubs in the world, Singapore is a magnet for leisure lovers as well as business magnets. Filled with bustling streets and shopping destinations, the country also boasts many rich natural landscapes. Singapore is easy to get around even for first-timers because the country has fast and efficient transport facilities. Check out these pointers for smooth travelling in the Lion City.

On the road

The public transport system in Singapore has spread to all corners of the nation. These buses function throughout the day and night. If you hope to do most of your travels via buses, it is advisable to purchase prepaid cards. You can learn about the routes via Transit Link travel guides. Taxis are available at your doorstep 24 hours a day. You can book one through an app if you wish to make a swift journey or need to carry some baggage around. Extra charges can apply during peak hours.  If you like to be behind the wheel, you can also rent a car but there is little point in doing so as Singapore is equipped with extensive, punctual and cost-effective modes of transportation.  Cycling is on the rise in the city today. Noticing this trend authorities have established more cycling paths to make way for a greener and more sustainable transportation system in the country. Such steps encourage a cycling network and motivate the public to reach daily amenities in their closest neighbourhood centre and further on foot or by peddling. There are 525km of national-level cycling paths in the country at present and the Singapore Land Transport Authority has made plans to upgrade this network to about 1300km by 2030. If your destination is close by, you can even walk there. Stay at a place like Value Hotel Thomson, which is located along Balestier Road, and you will be near many tourist attractions like Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall, the Shaw film studio on Jalan Ampas, Novena Church, Sasanaransi Buddhist Temple, Zhongshan Mall, Springleaf Nature Park and Kuan Im Tng Temple.  You can even sample some dishes that are famous in this region such as bak kut teh and chicken rice at eateries close by.

Rail cruising

Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT) is one of the most bankable and systematic ways of commuting in the Lion City. Trains run daily at almost any hour during the day and reach almost any destination you have in mind. They are equipped with comfortable seating facilities, are air-conditioned and cheap. Try to book accommodation near the station if you plan to travel by train. Some of the best hotel chains in Singapore have noted this fact and have established their properties near the SMRT for their guests’ convenience.

Airport transits

Changi Airport is known as the country’s main aviation centre. It is one of the biggest transportation destinations in Asia and is situated towards the eastern part of the nation. You can travel from the airport to the city centre via bus, taxi or SMRT. Since a station is conveniently linked to the airport, many travellers use the SMRT to get to the city. Another mode of transportation you can use is the City Shuttle which runs through three main paths: the main Business District, the Colonial District and Orchard Road.  You can catch this mode of transportation every 20 minutes. It functions from 6 am to midnight. You can also catch a bus from the airport and reach the city centre within half an hour. Taxis are expensive but convenient if you want to dash it and if you have some luggage in tow.
