Ranked among Thailand's top beach holiday destinations, Phuket is not only for water sports lovers and honeymooners. Phuket is ideal for tranquil family getaways, and enjoying a beach holiday on this popular island requires finding the best beach areas for one's vacation goals. From beaches ideal for evening strolls to seaside hotspots more suited for water-based adventures, here's a rundown of the finest family beaches in Phuket.

Bangtao Beach

Tipped to be the best beach for families in the northern region of the isle of Phuket, Bangtao Beach also has the distinct honour of being one of the longest beaches in Phuket. Stretching across 6km, it should come as no surprise that different sections of the beach are identified by various names. The southern end of the beach is what's called Bangtao Beach while the middle portion of its 6km length is called Laguna with the northern end taking the name Layan Beach. Home to SAii Laguna Phuket and other resorts, Bangtao Beach is a premier destination for Phuket family holidays due to the family-oriented amenities available on the beachfront. Bangtao Beach is lined with restaurants, malls, beach clubs, spas and even medical clinics, and one could hardly conceive of a more convenient beach.

Surin Beach

Families on the lookout for a beach that provides plenty of amenities but also the calm, serenity of a secluded seaside should look no further than Surin Beach. Offering families the chance to unwind and relax by its crystal clear waters, Surin Beach also boasts a handful of shops and restaurants that makes a beach day at the venue a seamless affair.

Kamala Beach

Those who are looking to truly get away from the hustle and bustle of Phuket's congested beaches must head over to Kamala Beach, a peaceful oasis among the island's beach hubs. Occupying a scenic bay and bordering a charming fishing hamlet, the area is a tranquil retreat for families who wish to spend quality time together instead of rushing from one water-bound activity to another. Encircled by wooded hilltops, Kamala Beach is also a prime location for catching the sunset every evening. Although there are restaurants and beach clubs nearby, these establishments do not disturb the quiet atmosphere of this idyllic piece of paradise.

Mai Khao Beach

Families in search of a breathtaking beach that's also off-the-beaten track will find no finer alternative to Mai Khao Beach. Considered a hidden gem that's mostly enjoyed by locals, Mai Khao Beach is not as developed or as commercial as other Phuket beaches. Families who spend the day at Mai Khao can also pop by the Sirinath National Park in the afternoon as it is located on the southern edge of the beach. Close to the Phuket International Airport, it is remarkable how secluded and private this beach is given its strategic location near the busy airport terminal.

Karon Beach

While it may be 4km long, Karon Beach is still twice as long as neighbouring Kata Beach and is far more popular thanks to the lively ambience and golden sands of the beachfront. Karon Beach is considered one of the best places to enjoy a shopping spree in Phuket, and families can also wine and dine at the countless restaurants located on the edge of this white, sandy beach.

Kata Beach

Families with toddlers and young children should not miss the chance to spend a day at Kata Beach, arguably the gentlest beach in Phuket. Known for its small waves and peaceful waters, the beach is the perfect playground for young tots who are not able to swim or even tread water. Parents with an interest in taking part in surfing lessons will find that there are plenty of instructors to choose from while a tour of the Kata Beach Community Park is also a must for families with small children.
