What Else Will We See From WWE's Women's Division at WrestleMania 40?

A look at the announced matches and predicting some others for WWE's Women's Division at the grand stage

Amazing. This year will celebrate 40 years of WrestleMania. The Grandest Stage of Them All; the WWE's equivalent of the Super Bowl and the Stanley Cup. This year is a milestone. Four decades. To think, an event that took place on March 31, 1985 at Madison Square Garden would evolve and become the biggest stage in all of professional wrestling. Just absolutely epic.

Being the women's wrestling fan, enthusiast, and aficionado that I am, I have to wonder, what will be in store for the women of WWE. We know two matches that will take place, but as usual, there's a potential for much more. Let's start with the official matches.

WWE Women's Championship

The first women's match to be set in stone was this contest that signifies the implosion of Damage CTRL, with Bayley (the very person who started the faction a year and a half ago) challenging Iyo Sky for the WWE Women's Championship. WrestleMania's champion and challenger served as the founding members of Damage CTRL, along with Dakota Kai, with the three of them coming together at SummerSlam in 2022. It wasn't until Crown Jewel in 2023 that Kairi Sane returned to WWE and joined the faction, and six days later, Asuka joined the villainous faction, which reunited her with Sane, leading to the reformed Kabuki Warriors capturing the WWE Tag Team Championship.

In recent months, we've seen Bayley slowly losing her grip on the faction, but that didn't deter her from winning the Women's Royal Rumble this year. Bayley's sights were apparently set on Rhea Ripley, as the plan was for Damage CTRL to hold all of WWE's titles, but Bayley overheard Iyo and the KWs mocking her. On decision day, Bayley called out the trio for mocking her, which included the reveal that Bayley spoke Japanese and understood all of the insults the trio had been hurling at her (the Seinfeld fan in me couldn't help but enjoy that reveal). Bayley accused Iyo of changing her attitude once Asuka and Sane became part of the group, and that led to the KWs attacking Bayley, who fought back with a pipe and then chose to face Iyo at WrestleMania.

We all knew this was coming--Bayley being betrayed. I didn't think the title would be involved, because Bayley didn't need it. Bayley gets enough at it is; honestly, she's been shoved down fans' throats for two years. But this still should be good. Oh, one more thing: Dakota Kai. As we saw, Dakota is on Bayley's side, which I like, because Bayley needs an ally. However, will Dakota turn on her at WM Weekend? We'll find out.

Women's World Championship

The only other announced match (at this point) is the Women's World Championship. With Bayley choosing to face Iyo, Rhea Ripley needed an opponent of her own for WM, leading to the Elimination Chamber deciding who would get that opportunity. At the Elimination Chamber event in Australia, six women fought inside the structure for that golden opportunity: Tiffany Stratton, Naomi, Bianca Belair, Liv Morgan, Raquel Rodriguez, and Becky Lynch. Many fans figured it would be either Becky or Liv, but as for me, I knew it would be Becky. Sure enough, it was The Man who--in her very first Chamber match--emerged victorious and earned a trip to Philadelphia, while the main event saw Rhea successful in her title defense against Nia Jax.

This was destined to happen. Rhea vs Becky had been teased since the New Year began. This is exactly what WWE wanted; the current dominant champion who will enter WM with a one-year long reign, and an absolute titan as challenger. Chances are Becky will win this, because Rhea will enter WM as champion for a year--she won that title at last year's WM against Charlotte Flair.

As for other possibilities:

I absolutely expect Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill to go at it at WrestleMania. Everyone's pulling for this; even going back as far as Jade Cargill's tenure in All Elite Wrestling. Jade's WWE signing was absolutely landmark, and once she put pen to paper, everyone had the dream match pictured: Jade vs Bianca. This would be so epic: a pair of hugely over and immensely talented Black superstars in the Women's Division facing off in an amazing contest at the grand stage. Chances are, if we get this WrestleMania match, Jade will win, because a debut win on the grand stage against one of the best in this division is a great way to kick off a WWE career.

I still say Liv Morgan should have won this year's Rumble, though her goal is to win next year's Rumble. Ever since the Elimination Chamber event, the hashtag, #WeWantLiv, has been trending--similiar to #WeWantCody for Cody Rhodes. WWE owes Liv. After all, they botched her title run and made it too short, while also having her job out to Ronda Rousey. Now, fans are saying that she should be added to the Becky/Rhea match. Unfortunately, there's no logic in that. So we're going to have to wait regarding a World Title opportunity for Liv. That's no problem for me, because I have the patience of a saint. Remember: I waited 21 years for a Stanley Cup.

The Women's Tag Team Championship will celebrate five years this year, and in past WrestleManias, we've seen the titles defended in multi-team matches. This year should be no exception. Four teams is customary for this bout. I could see the following three teams challenge the Kabuki Warriors: Shayna Baszler and Zoey Stark, Raquel Rodriguez and Liv Morgan, and Candice LeRae and Indy Hartwell. However, seeing as this is the title's fifth anniversary, a fifth team can be added to this match. That fifth team: Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill. Think about it. Yeah, Bianca vs Jade would be the ultimate dream match, but imagine the team of Bianca and Jade actually winning the tag titles together. That would be so delicious!

I just now thought of this mere minutes before writing this: we still haven't seen the return of the WrestleMania Women's Battle Royal. We remember how this started; the first one took place six years ago, and returned at WrestleMania 35. Since the pandemic, we have not seen this match, and even though the restrictions have been lifted, we have still yet to see this battle royal resurface. Now would be the perfect time to bring back the WrestleMania Women's Battle Royal, and if they do, I know who will win it: Tiffany Stratton. Tiffany Stratton has been hella over in the last year or so, and we saw it at the Elimination Chamber event; the Aussie fans chanting "Tiffy Time" repeatedly. Winning the battle royal could lead to some big things for Tiffany Stratton; here's hoping we see this match for the first time in five years.

We are now in the home stretch in the road to WrestleMania! For the fifth straight year, WrestleMania is a two-night event, taking place on April 6 and 7 in Philadelphia (I'm dead serious, I hope we get a "Tush Push" reference at the event). I am very hopeful that we see a lot of attention and a lot of matches for WWE's Women's Division, because as I often say on a loop, women are the true stars of wrestling.
