- North Korea, ruled by the Kim family for over 70 years, is known for its human rights abuses, including extermination, murder, enslavement, torture, and imprisonment, as reported by the United Nations Commission in 2014. 😡🚨
- Mr. Kim, a defector who shared his story with the BBC, witnessed the public execution of a 22-year-old man for listening to South Korean music and watching South Korean films, which became punishable by death in December 2020. 😱🎵
- And then COVID-19 hit, and things went from bad to "holy shit, this is a disaster." The government used the pandemic to squeeze every last penny out of its people, leaving them starving and desperate. 🤑😷
- Motivated by the deaths of his farmer friends and the tragic suicide of another friend, Mr. Kim decided to flee the country with his family, devising a plan to escape by sea with his brother, who owned a boat. 🚣♂️🌊
- The family's escape required meticulous planning, including memorizing guard schedules, navigating a minefield, and arming themselves with makeshift weapons to defend against potential capture. 💣😤
- On May 6th, 2023, the Kim family successfully crossed the maritime border to South Korea, where they were rescued by the South Korean navy and taken to a resettlement center to begin their new lives. 🙏🇰🇷
- Despite the Kims' success, many North Koreans who attempt to escape never make it out, facing imprisonment, execution, or forced repatriation by Chinese authorities, who label them as illegal migrants. 😢🚫
- The South Korean Ministry of Unification prioritizes North Korean human rights but admits to having "limited tools" to address the issue, focusing on raising awareness through international organizations. 🗣️🌍
- While adjusting to life in South Korea has been challenging for the Kim family, they now have the freedom to live without fear of oppression, starvation, and the constant threat of punishment for minor infractions. 💪❤️

What is the United States's plan if China takes Taiwan?
The year 2027 is predicted by many senior American defense officials as the potential date for a war between the U.S. and China, with Taiwan being at the heart of the conflict. 🇹🇼🚨 Taiwan's importance lies in its status as a flourishing democracy, its strategic location in the First Island Chain, and its role as the world's leading manufacturer of advanced computer microchips. 🖥️💰 China's got its eyes on Taiwan's microchip factories like a kid in a candy store. If they get their hands on them, they'll have the whole world by the economic balls. And that's a big no-no for the U.S. and its liberal world order. 🙅♂️🌍 The U.S. is preparing for the possibility of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan by moving advanced microchip manufacturing to the mainland U.S. and investing in domestic production of rare earth minerals. 💪🇺🇸 If Taiwan falls, the U.S. plans to focus on containment of Chinese forces by strengthening the Second Island Chain, which stretches from Japan's Bonin Islands to Guam and Western New Guinea. 🗺️🛳️ The U.S. Navy is developing a "ghost fleet" of unmanned vessels to counter China's expanding naval capabilities and the potential collapse of the First Island Chain. 👻🚢 The U.S. is also building a stronger relationship with India, which has historically been aligned with Russia but is now looking to the U.S. for arms to counter China's military modernization. 🤝🇺🇸 The fall of Taiwan could lead to a shift in allegiances among Southeast Asian nations, with many potentially aligning with China, putting pressure on India from multiple flanks. 😬🗺️ Increased partnerships between the Indian and American militaries aim to counter this threat, with the possibility of American forces being sent to India to help defend the nation and keep the Indian Ocean clear of Chinese fleets. 👀⏳ The best preparation for the potential fall of Taiwan is to ensure that it never happens in the first place, as its loss would threaten the entire global world order that has created an unprecedented period of relative peace. 💡✅

Letter to our Queer & Trans Youth
Hey, you. I thought I’d start this letter by telling you a little about myself, just so you know who you’re dealing with. I’m an emotional dad, father to three amazing kids who we met through the foster care system, and whose presence in our lives has really transformed my sense of responsibility to the communities that surround us. The connections we’ve made with one another, with our extended families, and with the communities where we live and look for belonging have catapulted us into this whirlwind of emotional tumult which, while not easy by any stretch of the measure, has also been remarkably healing. I realize ours is really only a one-sided chosen family, since our kids didn’t get to choose to live here, but I’d like to think that they did choose to let us love them, which allowed them to grow to love us. And I think that’s where I want to go with this letter- to a place where you can find belonging and healing- even if the pathway there may be peppered with some emotional tumult.
