Unraveling Love

The Poem Version

Love is forever,

But it's also right now.

Just because I like you,

Doesn't mean you'll be my spouse.

Will I ever get married?

I'm not so sure right now.

Things get complicated

Even without the law around.

If we share a home,

Whose house will it be?

I'm not sure I can trust enough

To throw caution to the wind.

Even if you promise me,

Doubt will surely creep in.

I can't help it.

I can't know that you'll always be around.

Love can be momentary,

But the memory lingers.

I know when I lost you -

That thought still lingers.

I said the wrong thing

And I knew it right away.

But there was no turning back.

It was a painful day.

I felt what-could-have-been slip away.

I saw the sparkle in your eye change,

Your ever-bright smile fade.

We walked in together

And walked out side by side,

But our energy had shifted

And fate was no longer on our side.

Now I see you in glances,

Living your best life.

You're out taking chances,

While I simmer in strife.

I take inspiration from you, always.

And sincerely hope you have a great life.

I'm always happy for your wins,

Even if I'm not right by your side.

When I think of love,

Your face comes to mind.

It may not define it for me,

But it did for a time.

I still think about

The way your hand fit in mine

And the way you held me

When you knew I might cry.

I have a special place in my heart

For your comfort and your care

And your distractions from the hard parts.

Even though life has never been a breeze,

Something about you always put me at ease.

You always had time for some fun and a laugh,

Even if that messed with the plans that we had.

You let me know what you felt

Despite my hard shell

And you didn't let me hide

Or run away.

You accepted me for my crazy

And for all of my flaws

Because, to you, I was special

And worth the wild ride.

We came from miles apart and

Entirely different worlds.

You were my city boy

And I was your country girl.

Still to this day,

I reminisce from time to time

About the times we spent together

And the things you said to me.

Love comes in many forms.

It doesn't know real bounds.

It will sometimes stand between us,

But it will also lead us back around.

Love doesn't disappear,

Even if it fades.

It might completely morph

Into a different phase.

I may not still be in love with you,

But love for you I'll always feel.

For my heart has rested on yours

And they've both left their marks.

I shared with you, my secrets

And I've given you my time.

I've laid with you for hours

And I've hung onto the time.

I've bonded with your hometown

Even if only through your words.

I've listened to your memories

And tucked them away with mine.

We have connected deeply

In ways we can't take back.

No matter what happens later,

We'll always share a past.

When I really think about it

And try to label things,

I can pinpoint different people

Who have made me feel some ways.

However, lacking proper definitions

And causing confusion in my brain,

I have accepted that they all

Are love, just the same.

They may look and be completely different

And they sure felt that way,

But they all fall under

Love anyway.

It may be for that person

Who talked with me that day.

Or for the one who held my hand

And danced with me in the parking lot.

It might be for the one

That hugged me just so.

Or for the one that

Didn't even know.

It may be for

The one who got away.

But regardless of who,

Or when,

Or where,

Or how,

Or why,

For them,

Some love will still remain.

Believable and emotional depiction of a love that the characters and the reader wished had worked out.

I really like this line… “I still think about The way your hand fit in mine”, and the part about dancing in the parking lot. Those are visuals that bring up warm memories in the reader. Well done. 🙌🏻♥️
