The Girl I Don’t Know
A poem that was written long before I knew who my wife would be

who are you?
and what is your name?
do you know me?
do we think the same?
are we soul mates?
is it love at first sight?
do we marry?
will we fight?
you are out there
and I’m here
never knowing a love that I fear
will I meet you?
or will you meet me?
will we be together?
I guess I’ll wait and see.
...
I wrote this poem on May 5th, 1997. I met the girl I would marry in 1993, when we were young teenagers. I had no idea she would be the girl I would marry then. We remained friends until a spark was kindled in 1999, and then we married in 2002. I think my early writing reflects what a hopeless romantic I was as a young adult.
The picture I took above is not of my wife and I but of another couple for whom I had the pleasure of being their wedding photographer for their special day. I love shots like this. I love negative space, shooting low from the ground (I was on my belly in the grass), taking the subject a long distance away, and still making them the focus of the picture.
Thank you for reading my poetry and learning more about my photography. My approach to all my writing is to reflect on the pictures I have taken in the past and now tell a story and put them into words in an effort to bring them to life.
