The Dragons and the Skies

A fiery tale

Let’s talk of dragons and the skies.

You see, each time a dragon dies

A patch of sky goes dead with him

Becoming grey and dull and dim,

The stars and clouds move aside

And all the people who decide

To stay below the empty sky

Lose the ability to cry.

Without the rains, without the tears

The forest dries in seven years,

The grasses turn to yellow dust

And, angry gust by angry gust

From east to west, from south to north

The winds erode away the earth

And leave behind an angry chasm -

Until one day a heaving spasm

Releases fires from below,

And then, magnificently slow

A newborn dragon rises high

And flies across the waiting sky.

Until that chasm becomes a sea,

What can we do but wait and see?
