The Day the Sky Fell
A Bedtime Story Made of Haikus
Once upon a time,
the sky fell in increments;
In shards of glass mist.
~
Hard enough to pierce
the heart of any man near,
soft enough to taste.
~
Like cotton candy
on a warm summer's evening
Or ice cream in spring.
~
One man caught the sky
on the tip of his pink tongue
and it melted sweet.
~
Stars formed inside him.
His belly growled with the weight
of the universe.
~
"Tell me a story,"
The Sun whispered one warm day,
"And the stars will leave."
~
So the man thought hard
and told a tale of white knights
and damsels to save.
~
The Sun shook her head.
"The best stories speak to those
listening to it."
~
"I need no saving
and have no interest in knights.
Make the story mine."
~
The man thought again
and told a tale of bright light,
guiding all people.
~
Satisfied, The Sun
beamed down on the man and said,
"Stars, come back out now."
~
His belly rumbled
and he began to feel sick.
Then he vomited.
~
Stars burst out of him
and splattered across the sky,
twinkling all at once.
~
And made the patterns
of constellations around
The Sun's bright hot light.
~
The Sun plucked the star
that shined brighter than all and
gave it to the man.
~
"This star is for you.
For now you have learned the art
Of storytelling."
~
Now when the star shines,
dreamers and storytellers
find inspiration.
~
And it's all because
of the day the sky fell down
and one man caught it.
