Top Story - June 2024

the only time

i did not curse

the folds of my flesh

is when my body

was part of yours.

you would hold me

like a butterfly in your palm,

rock me to and fro

like a child,

whisper in my ear

how i did you proud.

i could not hate me

when i was yours,

when you would look at me

as the sun danced on my face,

when you smiled

when i held you in my arms.

i thought:

maybe i am a good thing.

now i hate you

and i can no longer

face the mirror.

i hate you for leaving and taking me with you.

heartbreak

You've carved bits of flesh from the bone with this one. Your words create everything I need to know to understand the narrator's relationship with her lover and with herself. As I read the lines I could feel the palpable power imbalance, the willingness to lose/find/lose oneself in another and to be defined by someone else. I recognize fully that the narrator's relationship (and view of the relationship) are utterly unhealthy, but the way you've painted it, I do feel sympathy for her. That's quite a feat. Brilliant writing to have me invested.

  • This was so poignant and relatable as well

  • I felt your words
