Rainbow on A Sunset Mind

The Layers of My Thoughts

I can’t be sure how others view the world,

Or how the gears of their minds work.

What I am sure of is that where others find boredom,

I find interest.

I can always find something to occupy my ever-running mind.

There is no item too small or mundane.

When one has a brain and an inquisitive mind,

I see no possibility of a lack of entertainment.

A tree,

A blanket,

A cup of water,

A piece of lint.

All things that entice deep thinking.

Where the train will lead, who could know.

Besides the items themselves and their functions,

There are their qualities:

Color,

Shape,

Size,

Texture.

In any setting – any situation – there is a vast array of shades and tints.

All working to pull the mind to different moods, different memories,

Perhaps some scenarios yet to occur.

Or have they?

The idea of color fascinates me on a level all its own.

We are told – by books, by videos, by teachers –

That humans have certain capabilities when it comes to seeing color.

That other animals, like the mantis shrimp,

See colors that we cannot even imagine.

This is science.

But how can we be sure that all humans have the same capabilities?

How can we possibly know that how I see green

Is the same way that you see green?

We are all taught to call the color of grass green,

But does my green appear anything like the green that you see?

I suppose it doesn’t necessarily matter.

How another thinks and how another sees

Is what makes each life unique.

For instance:

I can see pictures in my head.

My thoughts are visual, abstract, and verbal.

I can see colors on cue.

There are several trains of thought going at all times

In the station of my mind.

There are layers of internal monologue –

Like a radio that is picking up multiple stations at once.

There are also visual scenarios –

Like a movie running in the background on which I occasionally focus my attention.

When I am consciously forming thoughts,

I can directly call to mind words, images, colors.

Navigating the busyness of my mind is something like

Admiring a multi-colored sunset sky

And seeing a rainbow layered within it.
