Peace Garden Transformations

a poem about Gardening

By Shanon Marie Clare Angermeyer NormanPublished about a month ago 2 min read

Kafka, I invite you to see

my Peace Garden, what was and will be.

It began with a steep slope of overgrown brush and weeds,

cut back and fenced out --- a clothing pole left for our needs.

Then I brought the orange hammock and the macrame,

watched some fresh plants grow and saw some leave and some stay.

The earth in Florida is dry and sandy

so I fertilize with anything handy.

The cat and butterflies offer much help and love

like the sun and rain from the sky above.

At first I thought I could build a deck,

but my skills with tools made the idea a wreck.

So I focused instead on flowers and plants

and gave them music and critical rants.

The birds come to visit and I learn their songs;

I learn their names and what's right and wrong.

The possum has been here, along with the squirrel.

They are polite and know this garden is my world.

The Spring Flower Bed has no real flowers yet,

but it's 2nd life will bloom and on that you can bet.

The palm is the only survivor behind the cement wall,

but the three man-made ponds remain steady as the waterfall.

The strongest and tallest plant is for January's snow,

but November's banana trees survived the hardest shows.

The two sister pink flowers think differently about the rains.

Capricorn stands proud while Pisces feels ashamed.

The herbs are strong but I forgot their names

and the once small purple plant has grown up and not lame.

The vines never decorated the fence as I had hoped,

but the trees created a design like a canopy cloak.

The tall palm tree who used to shed like a banshee

now dons a skirt prouder than a blossoming pansy.

I have 3 solar powered lights to make the night glow ----

One for harvest, one for palm, and one for the snow.

The birds and airplanes brag in the blue sky

and when the rains come I don't ask why or cry.

I simply thank the sun and rain both

for feeding Peace Garden with what's needed to grow.
