My kids were teens first before my siblings had teens. When asked, I would say that I found I just needed to keep them alive until they were about 17.
Then, even when they thought I was a horrible parent as a teen, in their early 20s, I would get the message of how wonderful of a mother I was. It can take until late 20s too, depending on the child!
My youngest son was diagnosed with possible sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) at one month of age. I was told that he could stop breathing anytime until he was 2.5.
That totally affected my parenting in more ways than one. I think I was strict and some of the strictness was because of the things I didn't get growing up. I was determined that my children would not get away with what I did.

Then I realized I was parenting exactly how I was meant to parent. I was giving those children what they needed to survive, thrive, and pay their own rent!
Can they cook? Not make book!
Can they wash their clothes? Be careful who they chose.
Do they have some manners? Maybe even good planners.
Can they work and earn a living? And then there is caregiving.
They will have children after all. That is big, never small!
Most of all they need plenty of love. Those little bratty doves!
When I remarried, my husband-to-be had a 14 year old!
Wait, I just raised three teenagers, that was enough for me I told!
We married once she turned 18. Not a parenting job for me of that teen!
I heard of wicked stepparents and I wanted none of that. Not another brat!
