i was a girl

who belonged nowhere

to nobody -

destiny’s child

drinking wine

straight out of the bottle

on the shores of

Malibu beach.

the waves kissed

my ankles

and i laughed

the sand was too hot

i didn’t care

the wind tugged my hair.

i think i ran -

i don’t remember

i was probably drunk.

i ate ice cream

out of a blue truck

and fell asleep

midday

amongst the hills

the waves and the surf boards

and honking Volkswagen buses.

i still think

about that time

i found myself

in California’s sunshine.

(it smelled like salt and weed).
