Mad Dog

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished 26 days ago 1 min read
Jean-Leon Gerome, "Diogenes," 1860

Diogenes: worst of dogs, best of men

Doing publicly what most deem private

Urinating on fools now and again

Seldom obedient, never quiet

https://library.sweetmarias.com/ethiopia-harar-and-dire-dawa/

You hated pride, pretense and vanity

You would find many to bite in our streets

You spoiled currency, a profanity

In our hearts, it every foe defeats

You told the great to step out of your light

And mocked Plato with a naked chicken

In barking and mocking did you delight

Holding your breath, you quit this viper's den

With a hundred lamps, you could not locate

A dog quite as mad, nor a soul as great

Ekphrastic

Superbly written. The line: You would find many to bite in our streets": speaks volumes on today's society and how easy it is to criticize our lack of intellect or maybe lack of interest in digging deeper for truth in the happenings of our current affairs. I am also impressed by: "You spoiled currency, a profanity": a strong statement against the corrupt values of society. I got a lot out of reading this.

  • I think I may be missing some context because I don't really get this but it's beautifully written as always!

  • A nice Ekphratic sonnet!
