Longing for Love

(A poem)

Chocolates and Roses,

That’s what represents undying love

But chocolates melt and roses wilt

What does that mean for the love I have felt

What about the love I hope to have?

Love comes from the clouds or so they say

Carried on some cupids arrow from up above

A journey to go on, some conquest to be won

It's supposed to be all silly cute and fun

Little hearts that say you're mine and songs that say you're the one

But I'm not convinced love is something that just happens, starts on a whim

And then is carried away the next day on the wind

Maybe love is more than that, Maybe love is something that is grown

Maybe love isn’t what they say it is all, Not something that occurs but that we create on our own

It's more than the leaves that change color and fall

It’s the tree left behind after, standing forever tall

built with deeply formed roots and arms reaching ever upward and outward

I dream and strive, and I pine, but why can't I create a love of that kind

And if I could, would it survive in a world where

Chocolates and roses help you get along just fine...
