Honeysuckle
The first time was the honey. Mom bought it from a nearby roadside farm. We drizzled it all over the cake she’d baked for my sixth birthday. I stuck one gooey, amber finger in my mouth and that was that. I was convulsing—my mind leaking images of our neighbor, Ms. Sharon, lying so preternaturally still that I somehow knew she was dead.
