How That Shadow Feels

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished 2 days ago 1 min read
Claude Monet, "Impression, Sunrise" 1872

Listen carefully to light and water

Watch the methodical patience of time

The tidal catechism grows warmer

As the dawn deglazes the ocean’s rhyme

Be the sun’s patient amanuensis

Encode everything that it now reveals

By negotiating a consensus

Between your eyes and how that shadow feels

Let your mind swim naked through the chanting

Of waves as they exasperate the shore

Become the cartographer of flowing

Sensations whose causes are no more

Stretch the canvas of your consciousness taut

Let the eulogy of morning be wrought

Ekphrastic

Watch the methodical patience of time... Impressionism: when you find out that water is your element!

Such rich word choice and stunning imagery in this! Masterfully done, D. J.!

  • Your poem invites us to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature and engage with their surroundings on a deeper level, great work!

  • Oooo, I learned a new word today, amanuensis! Loved your poem!

  • This is absolutely incredible - I'm a brand new subscriber, and beyond glad that I joined! The scene is refracted beautifully through this poem; I feel I can breathe in the scene as I read it. Plus I got to add the word 'amanuensis' to my vocabulary...stellar work, thank you for sharing!!
