Election Year

Ugliness in the distance

By Barb DukemanPublished 5 months ago 1 min read

About this time every four years,

Bullies come out of their comfortable hiding,

Claiming that any others’ views are

Detrimental to democracy.

Even as information is right at our fingertips,

Forgetting that truth is real,

Goons insist on stirring up vitriol

Having strings of conspiracies

In the wings, eagerly waiting to share.

Just as we begin to lose hope,

Kindness begs to return, carrying respect,

Love, and moments of inspiration.

Many await for the battles to start,

Never realizing they don’t have to.

Open minds are rare these days;

Precluded lines of thought are shouted,

Quelling more reasonable discussion and

Resulting in the breakdown of society.

Situations arise where prejudices are pushed,

Terrible accusations and rude assumptions

Undermining our “liberty for all.”

Variations fill our dynamic country, but

We fall back to chaos as divided we fall.

Xenophobic humanity,

Yowling at those who are different,

Zealously defending their bigoted ways.

Yep. It's true but hopefully, people will vote for what is right and see through the bluster.
