Don’t Look

Don’t Touch

Nobody talks about

Looking for something

You don’t know

If you want to find.

Like you

In a sea of faces

Like your spirit

In a crowd.

My eyes roam

Scan

Never really looking

Because my heart

Cannot make up her mind.

To look or not to look.

To search for what you showed me

To reach for what I know is there

But I keep my hands close

Do not look.

Do not touch.

Do not engage in polite conversation.

Do not smile and flip hair.

My mind still remembers

The spiral I found last time.

So I keep my eyes down

Thoughts to myself

Recoil at any person’s thumb on my lips

And pray that one day

I can lift my eyes

From the darkness you left me in

Look up into people’s eyes

And smile.
