Childhood Dreams, Part One

Flights of Fancy

There she is

Miss Meghan Thew

Traipsing through

Our little zoo.

With eyes of brown

And auburn hair

Whistling she is

Without a care

Waltzing by

With long, long legs

Glancing at

My darling eggs

Mocking me

With her blithe smile

Grinning like a crocodile.

I wonder what she’s thinking

As she saunters by

I wonder if she’s wishing

Wishing she could fly

Does she wish to have my wings

Green with a touch of maroon?

Does she wish that she could fly

Up towards the crescent moon?

Does she wish to be less tall?

Does she wish to be more thin?

Does she wish when she grows old

She’s without a double chin?

Wondering, wishing, thinking she is

Dreaming with much delight

Dreaming that one day she might

Take off into flight

Wishing, hoping, someday, somehow

That she soon may be

A beautiful, lovely, vocal bird

A beautiful macaw like me?

***Dreams truly are the most vivid when you are young and have a crazy imagination. I dreamed of alligators and zoos, strange creatures and magic. Some became stories. Some games. Some poetry. We tend to lose some of that magic as adults, so I chose to submit poems from my teenage years.
