Capturing Genuine Emotion Through Photography

The dynamics of shooting heartfelt photos.

By Brayden OrtmanPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

Some may say that you need to pack your bags and go shoot, but what does that mean? Spontaneity is that adventure you have always been craving, those late date nights that leave you dancing in the rain, and those moments where your heart cannot stop racing. The most thrilling attitude is to stop scheduling your practice as an obligation and to begin shooting as an instinct. This ability to shoot under practicality and add significant emotions to your shot is (what I call) dynamic shooting.

Dynamic shooting can transform your photo to be the next trending shot every wedding photographer is searching to achieve. The skill does not originate from how long you’ve been shooting, the skill dwells from how you use everything around you to add the flare every other photographer is lacking. I want you to imagine you’re walking through an incredibly stunning forest. As you stroll, you can feel the leaves falling off of the trees or the wind flowing through the pine or the rays of warm sunshine shooting down through the branches. The entire thought seems like a dream, and betters from: “I was walking through the forest and saw leaves, trees, and sky”. However, this is not an english article, therefore how can I apply this to my photography skills?

This image (above), for example, is full of hints and pieces that explain how you can be dynamic with emotions to add fascination to your photo. I mentioned in my first article that you do not need set locations to shoot great photography and that is true (for the most part). The one exception I would consider is the emotions that can be incorporated into an amazing location! Be realistic— an ultra-blue glacier lake in the Canadian Rockies is much more appealing than your regular Saskatchewan fields. The main point is this still was captured off-the-grid, the image shouts adventure. There is a long dwindling road that inspires individuals to go on adventures. The feeling of location is only subject to those experiencing the moment. In other words, the scene wouldn’t seem romantic if the couple was not displaying intimacy, which would make the capture fairly ordinary and mundane. However, there is nothing special about intimacy; you could see one thousand photos of couples sharing a kiss and you wouldn’t be that interested. What changes this photo? Why does this photo feel deep? Why does this photo invoke an incredible bond?

The prompting completes the dynamic, right? They have their eyes closed, this proposes security and faithfulness. Their hands are lightly intertwined, which represents gracefulness, yet strong passions. The shot is filled with authenticity and genuineness. You are presented with this wild location, followed by a couple whose love is wonderfully concentrated on each other. I would agree that those settings suggest a candid and unaltered devotion. Those are the instances that catch the eye and inspire your audience to continue to gaze through your feed, and the longer your audience inspects your feed (assumably in love), the easier you can convert users into followers.

I do not believe that traditional posing and attempting to “hold still” for the moment is truly effective. How are you supposed to show the authenticity behind an emotion that is being faked. The entire issue can be spotted miles away and the greatest editing (non-manipulative) could not change the lack of wonder. If you are beginning in photography, I would consider the following: throw your clients into clothing that best represents them (a personal touch, but not literally), choose a location where their relationship can be the sole focus (devotion), use effective prompting (authenticity). This will ultimately change the way you operate during your shoots, if you are not already, but will be immeasurably beneficial for the outcomes of your business. You will draw in more clientele and begin building the long-running list of dream weddings. I am pumped for you and your business, you are chasing lovely goals ahead. However, before I conclude, this is the recap:

Dynamics are one of the most important attributes you can add to your photos. In this growing industry, the idea is to capture candid adventures of your couple, and wildly add their love into the mix. The best way to add dynamic to your shots is using personal touches (i.e. sentimental items and the story behind them), disconnected locations (areas that roar freedom), and prompting that displays authenticity. These aspects will make viewers fascinated with your photos, however, remember that these only work if you can use the first fundamentals, below!

You have attained some thrilling tips and tricks that I hope will abundantly bless your business and prosper you for years to come! If you have any further questions, reach out at my website! Happy shooting!
