Are We Allowing Goodness To Percolate?

A Small Thought About Goodness

It’s vital to have good thoughts to produce good writing. How do you have good thoughts? By surrounding yourself with people and events that produce good results, reading good literature, and consciously having good thoughts. While all this may be true, how does one define good? Isn’t good subjective from every individual? That may be, however, if it’s benign, healthy, and something that brings bliss can be considered as good and almost everyone might enjoy or would like to associate with that goodness.

E.g., if I keep my place tidy, it keeps unwanted diseases and illnesses away. Manifesting good health by maintaining my surroundings clean, is good. Wouldn’t most people like that? If I know people a bit, I’d say almost everyone wants to keep themselves healthy and in hygienic surroundings. It’s altogether different if people are willing to work on it.

Similarly, if something brings a feeling of soothing to all the senses is good. Inhaling a fragrance, listening to sonorous melodies, looking at picturesque scenery, tasting a sumptuous gourmet, and touching a loved one are some instances of good. Being a bit audacious, I’d say, goodness, is almost necessary for survival. Partaking in nutritious food, drinking clean water, and fresh air devoid of pollutants or toxins is critical to leading a healthy life.

It’s interesting how juxtaposition can also bring in a feeling of good. E.g., For filth lying in the corner of the street makes the heart and mind yearn for a clean place. Different imagery and version of the place gets visualized and longed for. Interesting, isn’t it? Let’s imagine a fresh acai bowl. Now, did you think of stale cream having acidic properties? Did you think of rotten strawberries and other fruits in that bowl? Why is it that you thought of fresh cream and fruits? Are we just conditioned to always think of good? Why is that so? If so, why do we allow any non-good thoughts and events to transpire?

Many religious scriptures often mention the rise and fall of things- What goes up must come down. But, can the concept of goodness get exemption from this? What if all good thoughts go up and nowhere but up? Will good thoughts eventually come down? It’s challenging to figure out since we live a fast-paced life and disallow ourselves to pause. Additionally, we surround ourselves with many individuals who have non-good thoughts, and our mind often becomes wayward and disoriented and continues to linger on with a chain reaction of non-good thoughts, thereby never leaving room for good thoughts.

Can we consciously think of good thoughts every day? I think so. We all want good thoughts to be with us, but how often do we sit down and consciously think of good thoughts? How often do we encourage each other to spare five minutes of our lives and think of good thoughts? Let's ignore the plural "Thoughts", and give ourselves a chance to think of a good "Thought". A thought doesn't necessarily have to be communicated, it can simply be in your mind and can potentially alter your emotions for the better. (Although, I'd encourage communicating your good Thought because the world is desperately waiting it to permeate).

I understand we all have our careers and lives to focus on. That's why, I've decided to think of a good Thought or Thoughts while undertaking my favorite activity- Walking. You too can think of your favorite activity and stop your mind for a few moments and consciously think of a good thought. I've started doing this consciously for the past two weeks, and while it's too soon to see a big difference, at the end of the day, I've started getting this feeling where I look forward to the next day with eagerness and a splash of optimism.

So, give yourself a chance, take a breather, sit down for five minutes and consciously think of good thoughts. Hopefully, thinking of good thoughts becomes part of your life, and you spread your good thoughts everywhere you go!

Peace!
