Michelle Obama Rules Out 2024 Run Despite Leading Polls

Michelle Obama’s popularity in presidential polls can be attributed to her charisma, intelligence, and grace during her time as First Lady.

She has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to public service and social causes, garnering widespread respect and admiration from a diverse range of Americans.

Her advocacy for issues such as education, health, and women’s rights has resonated with many people, making her a compelling figure in the political landscape.

However, it is important to note that popularity in polls

does not necessarily translate to a desire to run for political office.

Michelle Obama has repeatedly stated that she has no intention of running for president, citing a lack of interest in politics and a desire to focus on her

family and personal endeavors.

While she remains a highly influential figure in American society, it is unlikely that she will replace President Biden as the Democratic nominee in the next election.

Ultimately, Michelle Obama’s leadership and influence extend beyond the realm of politics, as she continues to inspire and empower individuals through her advocacy work and public appearances.

Her legacy as First Lady and her continued dedication to important causes ensure that she will remain a prominent figure in American society for years to come.

A recent poll found that many voters would support former First Lady Michelle Obama's presidential campaign, despite the fact that she has consistently rejected the idea, as pundits and an increasing number of Democrats urge President Joe Biden to withdraw from the race following his disastrous debate performance last week.

KEY FACTS

In a hypothetical November battle, Michelle Obama, the wife of former President Barack Obama, was the only Democrat to score higher than former President Donald Trump, according to a Reuters-Ipsos poll released on Tuesday.

She decisively outperformed Trump, out splitting him 50% to 39%. In the Ipsos poll, however, Biden and Trump were deadlocked at 40% to 40%. Governor Gavin Newsom of California was significantly behind Trump, polling 41% to 39%, while Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan was well behind him.

Voters have continued to view Michelle Obama favorably for more than ten years: In a Quinnipiac University survey from 2011, more than three-fifths of respondents rated her favorably, surpassing even her husband's approval rating from his first term of office (56.5%) and former President Bill Clinton's (59.2%).

Obama has, however, vehemently and repeatedly rejected ideas of a presidential run, saying bluntly at the end of her husband's second term in 2017: "No, nope, not going to do it." This is in spite of her time in the White House, her work as an advocate for healthy eating and fighting wealth inequality, and her well-received memoir "Becoming."

She doubled down on her reluctance to run in 2019, pushing people to back Biden instead, even as a political action committee organized to support Obama as Biden’s vice presidential pick.

Speculation of a Michelle Obama presidential run—and a potential Biden-Michelle Obama ticket—gained traction in March, with CNN commentator Alisyn Camerota floating an Obama vice presidential pick, and multiple outlets reported Democrats were quietly hinting at a Michelle Obama campaign amid concerns over Biden's advanced age following Special Counsel Robert Hur's report calling Biden a "elderly man with a poor memory" (Obama rejected calls for a presidential run.

Despite Obama's repeated assertions that she is not interested in running for president, some bookmakers remain skeptical. Polymarket, a betting platform, gives her a 6% chance of becoming the Democratic nominee in 2024, which is higher than California Gov. Gavin Newsom's 5% odds.

ESSENTIAL PREFACE

Throughout his presidency, Biden has faced doubts about his old age, as well as harsh criticism from Trump, who has often chastised Biden for what he claims to be diminishing mental acuity and physical ability, frequently mocking the president's mistakes.

But Biden's age became a much bigger problem among Democrats during CNN's debate on Thursday, when the 81-year-old looked to struggle to remain on track in his responses, speaking incoherently and in a hoarse, whispery voice at moments.

A day later, Biden made the admission that he doesn't "debate as well" as he once did at a campaign event. Despite this, he vowed to stay in the race, even as calls for his resignation from Democratic politicians and analysts increased.

The New York Times stated that Biden also reportedly told people in private that he may withdraw from the race if he did not perform well in a planned interview with George Stephanopoulos of ABC News.

However, the Biden administration denied the news was true. Representatives Lloyd Doggett of Texas and Raul Grijalva of Arizona, both Democrats in Congress, have called on Biden to withdraw from the race, while editorial boards of well-known newspapers like The New York Times and Chicago Tribune have made similar requests. Biden should also conclude his term in 2024.

TANGENT

Harris trails Trump 47%-45% in a CNN/SRRS post-debate survey; this is a better result than Biden's (six points behind Trump), Whitmer's (five points), Newsom's (five points behind), and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg's (four points behind). Right now, a rematch in November would have Biden trailing Trump by over two points (41.9% to 39.8%) according to FiveThirtyEight's weighted polling average, though Democrats would face difficulties if Harris runs. FiveThirtyEight reports that her approval rating is a miserable 37.5%, just a little higher than Biden's (37.2%).
