11 Ways to Making Friends in College

This will be steps by steps

By Michaela La BriePublished 5 years ago 3 min read

If you are unsure how to make friends in college, I'm going to give you 11 easy steps to making friends. I know that it’s hard making friends at college even when you are a freshman.

Step 1: Just Be Yourself around people.

If it's your first year of college and you don't know anyone, this is the prefect time to just be yourself around new people. Because they don't know you, they won't be able to judge you for what you did in your past. If you are being yourself around people and they don't like you for who you are, don't even try with them anymore, move on to the other people.

Step 2: Use your dorm as an advantage.

If you are going to a four year university, you are most likely living in a dorm; and because you are living in a dorm, it's another perfect chance to introduce yourself to new people. This is another perfect chance is because other people in your dorm building are most likely freshman or transfer from a different school and so they don't know you and you don't know them.

Step 3: Be interesting.

If and/or when you go off to college for the first time, it can be hard trying to make friends. So, when you go up to people and introduce yourself you have to make yourself interesting because if you don't, most of the time people won't have any interest. For example, for introducing yourself to other people say anything that would be interesting.

Step 4: Do extracurriculars.

When it comes to extracurriculars, it can be either sports or student government or the debate team or the arts, etc. Whatever extracurricular activity you choose, there are other people that have chosen the same activity and so that will be your chance to make some friends.

Step 5: Try to know a little about everything.

If you know a little bit about everything, you can have information for pretty much any conversation that you have with anyone. For example, if you know a little bit about sports, you can have a conversation with other people about the different sports.

Step 6: Find common ground.

When you meet some people and you want to connect more with them, you have to find some common ground with them. For example, some common ground would be like you guys all like sports or movies or something like that.

Step 7: Eat meals with people.

This step can be a great way to get to know other people because you guys are sitting near each other and just hanging out and so you guys can talk. For example, you guys can ask each other questions.

Step 8: Ask the usual questions.

You just have to ask the common questions. For example, you can ask where they are from or if they have any siblings? Things like that.

Step 9: invite people to do normally solitary activities.

If you invite other people to do normal activities, they will either say yes or no. But if they say yes, you guys can always go to the mall or movies or just someone’s house and hangout.

Step 10: Be nice.

Being nice to other people can go a very long way because they will actually want to be around you and will want to hang out with you more in the future and get to know you.

Step 11: Be yourself.

If people don’t like you for you, then they aren’t worth your time. You should be friends with only people that actually want to be around you because they like you for you and don’t want you to change.
