Then Came You - A Movie Review

'Then Came You' is a touching and funny exploration of life.

Live your best life and make each day count.

Then Came You is a 2018 film. Calvin and Skye are very different people who meet at an important time. Skye is terminally ill and wants Calvin’s help with her eccentric bucket list. During this short time, the pair learn about life and friendship.

Movies always find a way to tackle the sad subject matter and infuse comedy into it. Then Came You is a heartfelt dramedy that made me laugh and cry. This film will remind several viewers of family members or friends who have faced cancer battles. Live life like there is no tomorrow.

In their short time, Calvin and Skye learn a good deal about life and the importance of friendship. They are total opposites, with Calvin as an obsessive hypochondriac, and Skye being exuberant and saying whatever she pleases. You wouldn’t think Calvin and Skye would ever be friends, but always give any friendship a chance.

Asa Butterfield has been in several well-known films, like Hugo and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. He is a talented actor and did a good job as Calvin. Calvin learns to live a little and that the world is not dangerous.

I feel that the film didn’t implement enough of Calvin’s hypochondriac tendencies, focusing more on Skye. He does overcome his anxieties, but we were missing some of that transformation.

The role of Skye was a challenge taken on beautifully by Maisie Williams. Skye has a witty and sarcastic personality. In every scene, she has a new wig. This is off-topic, but I didn’t realize until after that her wigs represented her transformation to accepting defeat. Although Skye is daring, she fears people seeing her in a vulnerable state.

The film also stars Nina Dobrev, Ken Jeong, Tyler Hoechlin, Kevin Koechner, Peyton List, and Tituss Burgess. I loved the supporting cast, especially Burgess who was the comedy king. Now I want to find more films with him.

The ensemble has an important duty. Each character has a different reaction to Skye’s cancer diagnosis. It’s a difficult subject to discuss, but the one thing we cannot do is act like it’s nothing. Another important lesson is always to be honest, whether healthy or ill.

First and foremost, you need to have a sense of humor while watching this film. Right off the bat, the movie delivers Skye’s tragic news to viewers. If anything, this movie is a lesson about being honest.

Calvin and Skye knock off several things on Skye’s bucket list. The two comical cops, played respectively by Ken Jeung and Briana Venskus, agree to send Skye to jail and arrest someone (as a joke).

Peter Hutching does a remarkable job with the story, balancing comedy and drama. The cinematography also reflects integral details of the story. He made a story about friendship. Calvin and Skye help each other in more ways than one.

This is a movie about being vulnerable. I am always reluctant about cancer movies, but thankfully they all have a healing lesson. This film reminded me of my late aunt when she was fighting her own battle. Similar to Skye, she always kept a positive attitude and joked around.

Live your best life no matter what. Just enjoy the moment for what it is. Don’t ever take friendship for granted, no matter how short it is. I have learned this lesson myself.

Then Came You is a touching and funny exploration of life. It’s a sad story, but Then Came You is worth a watch. Find it on Prime.
