The Boys

S4 Ep5

Last we left our intrepid heroes Annie beat the shit out of Firecracker on live television. Firecracker also admitted to raping a 15 year old boy on live television but no one seemed to care about that. Butcher’s brain problem seems to have a life of its own and it is causing Butcher to hallucinate, blackout and potentially retain some of the power he had from the Compound V. Frenchie confessed his secret to his boyfriend, Kimiko had a showdown with the girl from the little fighting ring she was raised in. And Huey gave his dad some V and that perhaps saved his life? We will find out.

And right off the bat in the previously on tag we got a recap from Gen V about the virus that attacks the compound V in Supes blood.

The major corporation commentary in this show has always been amazing but starting off this episode with V52, a convention where they announce all their new projects…it's literally D23. When they talk about the phases of their movies it's literally formatted in the same way Marvel announces their future projects. Having the white dudes on stage talking about diversity with A-Train just standing there is hilarious and perfectly on point.

Huey’s dad is in fact alive and awake. They have a sweet little family moment and Huey asks his dad about why he wasn’t named his power of attorney. His dad basically told him he didn’t have the balls to pull the plug if necessary. Which is true. Huey is kind of a weak ass bitch. Huey’s dad is having some severe reactions to the Compound V. Memory lapses, the ability to phase through solid objects and seemingly super strength. This is truly so very upsetting. Watching Hugh spiral from the V is probably one of the most emotional scenes The Boys has ever done. He is angry and confused and it is really hard to watch.

MM’s daughter got in trouble for punching a Homelander fan and quite frankly I am so proud of her. For the record fighting does solve problems, it solves so many problems actually. We have established that Homelander is definitely a Nazi, and if his fans don’t realize that then they are just stupid Nazi’s and one should always punch Nazi’s.

Frenchie is spiraling. I mean he has been all season but he is really deep into drugs and that seems to be the only way that he can emotionally function. I am very concerned that my poor Frenchie is going to die this season. He is so closed off, he won't even talk to Kimiko about what he did.

Butcher has found out about this virus that kills supes. He also knows that the only vials of it that exist are in Neumann’s possession. So they start hatching a plan. This plan involves springing the old Vought CEO from prison for help.

There is something about Butcher this season that is extra irritating. His arrogance has always been infuriating but this season he’s dying and now he has this extra reckless, “what the fuck is gonna happen to me” kind of attitude and I just am ready for him to be done. He hasn’t really been a driving character for a season and a half now.

Ryan is back and these Vought idiots are trying to pitch him TV shows and he just doesn’t want to do it. He is clearly getting a lot from his dad but there is his momma in there too. He still thinks about things with compassion and some level of empathy. Ryan tells his dad that he wants to help people, but the problem is now that Ryan has spent too much time around Homelander and he is feeding off of other people’s humiliation.

The tension between Sister Sage and Firecracker is hilarious because Firecracker’s only skill is getting crazy people with no common sense or critical thought to listen to her. Sage is a genius and Firecracker is absolutely no match for her.

These V’d up animals are terrifying and it's making me so sad. The flying sheep are gross and so unhinged. The bunny made me sad. They are getting rid of the last dose of the virus in order to get away from these crazy suped up animals. I highly doubt that is actually the last dose of the virus because that would be kind of a waste of that storyline.

We round out this episode with no virus, Annie kind of losing her mind. Neumann takes her adopted father back after losing her baby daddy. Sam and Cate from Gen V have now been introduced. Homelander gives the 7 a very demented speech about how they shouldn’t be heroes, they should be “wrathful gods”. Frenchie turns himself in and poor Huey has to kill his dad so that he stops hurting people. Proving that Huey has grown as a person. Honestly this episode was so much more emotional than I had anticipated. This show has invoked a lot of emotions over its seasons, but mostly it's anger. I have never watched this show and felt such sadness. This episode did an incredible job of connecting the audience and the characters. This season really has become more than just social/political commentary, they are running with the internal struggles and executing them very well.
