5 awesome movie series to quench your thirst for adventure on the big screen.

So you've just binged all of the Star War's films (guilty) and now you're in silent agony, with nothing new to watch. You might have liked the story and music of the originals, the characters and action of the prequels and the cinematography and acting of the sequels, but the sci-fi elements? Maybe not so much. And that's ok! As a big fan of both Star Wars and Science Fiction, they can seem pretty similar or, at least, hard to tell apart but this surprisingly isn't the case.

Star Wars actually falls more under the category of science-fantasy/adventure than sci-fi so it can be really hard to find new film series with a similar feel to Star Wars if you start from there. A lot of Sci-fi is a bit slow, horror related and, well, sciency. Which is great if thats what you're looking for, but if youre looking for the fun tone and cool action of Star Wars, you might end up a little dissapointed.

So here's a really cool list of film series that capture a similar feel to the originals, prequels and sequels you've grown to love.

1. Indiana Jones

From the creator of 'Star Wars' (George Lucas) and starring the one and only Harrison Ford (Han Solo) as the titular character, archeologist, professor and full-time adventurer Indiana Jones, how couldn't this masterpiece of a franchise not be first? There's very, very few films with the same energy, passion and sheer brilliance that envelopes 'Indiana Jones'.

Whether that's Spielberg's flawless direction, Ford's acting, John William's phenomanal score (who also did 'Star Wars'), the gorgeous cinematography, insane action or you know what, all of them combined, you seriously don't want to ignore these films. If you've already seen them, I'd reccomend revisiting them. I loved them as a kid and adore them after recently seeing them as an adult now.

How is it similar?

If you liked Harrison Ford as Han Solo, you'll love him as Dr. Jones. The tone is pretty similar to 'Star Wars', full of adventure, elements of fantasy and high stakes but without taking itself too seriously. George Lucas created this character and produced the films which makes the atmosphere and vibes about as similar to 'Star Wars' as you can get. John Williams score also adds a theatrical levity, extremely similar to' Star Wars'.

2. Pirates of the Carribean

Based off of a theme park ride in Disneyland, the hopes were not exceedingly high for the first film in this 5-movie franchise. Thanks to an incredible set design, Hanz Zimmers iconic score and, of course, Johnny Depp's tremendous performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, the film was a massive hit and has since become a staple in adventure movies. The movies aren't afraid to get a little dark but the atmosphere is nearly always fun, with great set pieces and unique storylines.

How is it Similar?

The films are very grounded but feature a large amount of fantasy within the adventure. Like the use of lightsabers, the fight scenes are very intimate, often sword to sword which makes the danger feel more real and intense than a lot of other fantasy works.

The first film 'The Curse of the Black Pearl' actually plays out extremely similar to 'A New Hope', with the rogue pirate (Jack Sparrow/Han Solo) accompanying a young, somewhat naive, man (Will Turner/Luke Skywalker) to get back an important young woman (Princess Leia/Elizabeth Swan, the governers daughter) who's held captive aboard the enemy's ship (Darth Vader/Hector Barbossa). In the end, theres a satisfying climatic battle filled with imressive choreography.

3. Sam Raimi's Spiderman Trilogy

When the director of the cult classic 'Evil Dead' series was tasked with directing the first Spiderman film, nobody was quite sure what to expect. The result was so spectacular it changed the face of what we call super-hero films today.

Ditching the leather clad darkness of X-men and Blade, Raimi went in the direction he does best; campy, but unbelievably sincere. That direction has since defined the majority of super-hero films since but, in my opinion, nothing beats the origianls. This trilogy has some of the best action, writing and emotion of any film series and without which, it's hard to imagine what the MCU would look like today or if it would even exist.

How is it similar?

The emotion mixed with the campyness, the sincerity infused with the style, Raimi's trilogy houses countless elements of what made the original trilogy so great and iconic. If you're a fan of the prequels, you'll more than likely enjoy this trilogy too. The cheesy-ness is just immaculate and feels like a comic reads. The fights are more intense than you'd think and the young mans struggle to fight his enemy personified by Peter is strikingly similar to Luke's arc in the originals.

4. Harry Potter

I know, I know. You'd have to be living under a rock to have never heard of Harry Potter. But you'd be surprised at the amount of people I know who've never given this series a try, a lot of whom are 'Star Wars' fans. Which is a shame 'cause 'Harry Potter' has some of the most incredible worldbuilding and characterisation ever put on screen. Solid and consistent acting with an insanely cool story, you could an eigth 'Harry Potter' book based solely on how good it is.

How is it similar?

Harry vs Voldemort mirrors Luke vs Darth Vader more than any other hero vs villian in the history of cinema. It's genuinely ridiculous how similar their relationship is yet, somehow, both feel so seperate, confined and unique. From humble beginnings to facing the biggest threat to freedom known to their galaxy, the list of Luke and Harry's similarity's go on.

The worldbuilding in 'Star Wars' is incredible and only opposed by that of 'Harry Potter'. You can easily lose yourself in both worlds so if you enjoyed the rich worldbuilding and fantasy elements of 'Star Wars', you'll love 'Harry Potter'.

( PS. John Williams did the score :) )

5. Narnia

The Godfather of children's fantasy, 'Narnia' actually has quite a few mature and dark elements littered throughout. The live action films are gorgeous and although the story isn't overly similar to 'Star Wars' the key themes of family, good defeating evil and growing up are all present. Despite being primarily aimed at young kids, there's a lot these film offer than what may meet the eye.

How is it similar?

Like 'Star Wars' these films tackle adult themes and questions through the lense of youth. They are warm, tonally consistent and have a riveting, childish sense of adventure that's actually quite unique. The sets are extravagant and make the world of Narnia feel grand, similar to 'Harry Potter' and 'Star Wars'. Edmunds quarrel between choosing good and evil mirrors Anakin Skywalker's, although it's not taken to the same extremes. The action/adventure feels captivating but also innocent similar to a lot of 'Star Wars', particularly the prequels.
