"Obi-Wan Kenobi" Continues the Horrible Disney+ Trend that Needs to End.

Has Disney+ grown into a horrible mess of what it's supposed to be for Star Wars and Marvel? Two of Disney's great properties may be in trouble thanks to them being unaware of how to properly utilize streaming.

It feels like we're heading into the dark ages for the properties we grew up loving. I grew up a diehard Star Wars fan, with my room decked in action figures and posters. Star Wars along with the Marvel Cinematic Universe are easily my two favorite film franchises of all-time and something I want to be able to spend time with my kids watching someday.

After watching the finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi I am fearful to say that neither of these franchises might be going as strong as they were in their prime as long as Disney continues their current trend. Streaming is the new thing, and the days of theatres are truly going to be in question 10 years from now. There is a proper way to have streaming content and an improper way, and Disney currently doesn’t quite comprehend how to handle the streaming world yet.

There are some projects that are made for the TV format. Lots of content that you don’t want to cram into a 2-hour time span, but so far the only TV projects that Disney has made for Star Wars and the MCU have felt like they didn’t have enough content for over 6 hours of content. Wandavision and Hawkeye were hard to watch multiple times for multiple weeks, each episode feeling like only one major plot point got fleshed out and each could’ve been compacted into a single movie.

Loki is the only show produced where I truly found myself excited each week. There was enough story to flesh it out over multiple weeks. Even then, you could make not-so-hard choices and take out some meat and keep the amazing plot.

Moving on to Star Wars and the Obi-Wan Series and we have the same issue, too much filler in a plot that should’ve been simple. A story about Obi-Wan saving Leia and Darth Vader hunting him down. We could’ve stripped the entire plot of this show down to 2 hours and still had time to introduce Reva for whatever reason.

Whoever is making decisions for Disney+ seems to have it in their heads that people only want streaming content if it’s in TV format, and that is simply not the case. Encanto and Turning Red have proven that Disney+ can produce hit movies without releasing them in theatres. Making the TV shows save money, but looking at everything produced so far, I can promise you I won’t be rewatching them anytime soon.

My motivation to watch these has gotten so bad that now Ms. Marvel has come out, but I can honestly say I have no interest in watching it. I know I’m gonna invest 6 hours of my life for something that’s only filled with maybe 2.5 hours of actual plot.

Not only have you produced inferior products to what fans expect out of these two franchises specifically, but you now have given each zero rewatchability. These cinematic universes are already going to be hell to rewatch from start to finish, but you throw in the 6 episode TV shows that actually need to be viewed in order to comprehend the continuity of the films, and now Disney has guaranteed that younger generations will never see these projects in their entirety.

It's too late to fix what is already been screwed up and they can't turn around and say Disney+ shows aren't canon like they did with the Netflix shows for Marvel. I think at this point we just have to accept what we've been given but if I'm a higher-up at Disney I'm keeping whoever is in charge of their streaming services on a short leash.
