Reading for fun took a backseat for me over the last couple of years. I've read a lot for work and for my MFA program, but I haven't read a lot for myself. So this year, I'm focusing on making it a priority with 22 books I'm really excited to read.

And, I'm going to cheat on the first two (as they're books I'm already reading), so we're off to a great start.

Currently Reading

Right now, I'm listening to the audiobook of The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green. He narrates the book himself, which makes the personal essays feel closer to my heart. Everything is covered in this book, from songs to places we can never go. Some of the chapters with the most mundane titles are some of the most painful and heartwarming. It's absolute magic.

I'm also reading Finlay Donovan Is Killing It: A Mystery by Elle Cosimano. I'm about halfway through this book. So far, it's fast-paced and really enjoyable. It begs the question: how far will we go? And what happens when an already unexpected plan goes awry?

Revisiting Last Year's Reads

Next up on my list are a couple of books I started and didn't get through last year. These are:

These were all wonderful, but time got in the way. I'm excited to dive back into them!

Next Up

  • I ordered Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins in my January Book of the Month box. Looking forward to reading it when I finish my current reads.
  • The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett was on my list last year, but I never started it, so I'm excited to read it this year!
  • A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor by Hank Green is also on my list. I loved An Absolutely Remarkable Thing and totally recommend it, too.
  • I've heard amazing things about Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, so I'm looking forward to reading it this year.
  • How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu sounds like an incredible novel, but I'm nervous to read it. I'm really looking forward to it, but I'm curious how it will feel given the status of the world over the last two years.
  • I've also heard incredible things about Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner. I'm excited to read this powerful memoir!
  • I Love You, Call Me Back by Sabrina Benaim is one I've been excited about since I first read Depression & Other Magic Tricks. Benaim's poetry is powerful, forces questions, and even invites fun into the mix. Her work is truly magic.
  • I've had The Guest List by Lucy Foley on my shelf for a bit, so I'm excited to read it as well. I've been trying to read more thrillers/mysteries, so I think that will be a good one!
  • My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell is a novel that sounds incredibly difficult to read — the reason I've put it off — but the reviews are urging me to pick it up. While I think it will be tough, I think some of the best, most influential books are.
  • I want to read some of Taylor Jenkins Reid's older work this year. I love the work of hers that I've read so far, so I'm excited to dive into some of her previous novels, like Maybe in Another Life and One True Loves.
  • I also ordered The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave from Book of the Month. I think this book sounds like an interesting mystery with a unique duo trying to solve it.
  • As a go-to author of mine, I'm so excited for Wish You Were Here by Jodi Picoult. She knows how to write heartwrenching pain that continuously keeps you coming back for more — and here I am.
  • Forthcoming Books

    • Even though I'm not finished with her first book, I'm really excited for Elle Cosimano's Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead. This book is set to be released in February 2022.
    • The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley, which will also be released in February 2022.
    • One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle is set to be released in March 2022.
    • I'm so excited for Meant to Be Mine by Hannah Orenstein. I read, loved, and reviewed another one of her novels, Head Over Heels, last year. Her new novel is coming out in June!

That's it — 22 books for 2022. I hope you enjoy at least one of these this year.
