Lisa Frankenstein

Review

Lisa Frankenstein has been on my to watch list for a very long time. I love the cast, the vibes from the trailer are immaculate and honestly any movie set in the 80s gets my attention. So we are finally sitting my ass down and watching it. I will say that right off the bat I am in love with the opening sequence, it feels very Tim Burton-esque…the early years. It was also written and directed by women which we should know by now makes me very excited. And I have very high hopes for this movie so let’s dive in.

We are working off some great tropes here, mom dies and dad gets remarried too quickly. I’m getting mad Beetlejuice meets Heathers vibes and I’m super in love with it. Kathryn Newton was such a perfect casting choice for this.

The dream sequence is a work of art. I am so in love with the concept of her being inside a piece of art and the black and white is such a good touch. I am super in love with this, a masterpiece.

God this dumbass stepmom, she is the WORST. I have yet to watch a single piece of media where I don’t absolutely hate the stepmom. Random rant; if you marry someone with children, you are not a parent until that child bestows that title upon you. You have no authority, no nothing. The child either claims you or they don’t and there isn’t a damn thing you can do about it. I sort of hate her step sister too.

An 80s dress up montage! Yes, honestly I don’t even care what the plot of this movie is. We are going off of vibes entirely and they are amazing.

This stepmom is going to make me scream. What if she dies? I am so over this woman. Dammit Janet! A nice subtle Rocky Horror Picture Show reference. This movie is an incredible conglomeration of everything that made 80s movies awesome.

Lisa is crushing really hard on this editor dude, perfect portrayal of teenage girl all flustery and adorable.

They are really Heathers-ing their way through people and I love it. Lisa is also clearly modeled after Lydia from Beetlejuice, every detail of her story with a nice new twist on things. This poor boy, he got awakened from the dead and he clearly wants to protect Lisa and she is so focused on this boy at school who has shown actually no interest in her. It is very teenage girl accurate. Lisa is becoming a little more and more unhinged and it's amazing. What a good blend of two of the best 80s movies of all time.

Okay I’ve come around, the stepsister isn’t that bad she’s just a little annoying.

I also find it interesting that the more Lisa heals her boy, sews new parts onto him and electrocutes him he starts looking younger and more human.

This dude she’s crushing on, of course sucks and is sleeping with her stepsister which is actually really shitty of Taf. Lisa kind of finally reconciles that she has a new family and it's okay if she cares about her new sister. Cole Sprouse does a really good job of doing a lot with no dialogue, he got to be a very physical actor and I think that it really showed his skills.

Honestly the movie is insane, it's a little gross and it's definitely got some dark humor but it is batshit insane in the best way possible.

Honestly on just a story level I would probably only give this movie a 7/10 but because the vibes are immaculate and I love the 80s storytelling devices I am bumping it up an extra point. So overall the film gets an 8/10. It's not perfect but it's a really fun watch and I really think it has good rewatchability. The dialogue is awesome, that is really one of Diablo Cody’s specialties. I think that the movie does a great job of blending Heathers, Beetlejuice and even a little bit of Carrie into one story. Lisa Frankenstein is a fun time and I know that other people have said otherwise but those people are wrong and hate fun.
