Announcement of "Sunrise on the Reaping"

New Hunger Games book by Suzanne Collins (movie to follow)

Those who know me know that I'm a huge Hunger Games fan, so this morning, when the shocking announcement of Sunrise on the Reaping came out, a sudden shot of adrenaline suffused my system, inspiring me to write and share.

In this article, I'll be pulling from what we know, some whispers circulating media about what to predict, and my own thoughts.

The dystopian book is reported to be released on March 18th, 2025. It follows the 50th Hunger Games (which is a quarter Quell) where DOUBLE the tributes compete for the title of victor. For those who don't know much about Hunger Games, a Quarter Quell means there will be a surprise to the annual tournament where children (one boy and one girl) from 12 districts fight to the death—and not a good surprise.

The purpose of these vile Games is to remind the lower caste of their failed rebellion against the government, using the power of fear to prevent further uprisings.

On a related note, what are the chances it's set to come out a quarter of the way into the millennia?????

If we know anything about Collins, it's that she's nothing but direct with her symbolism. The point of her books isn't the game, it's the political message. And this time she's already given us a hint. "The ease with which the many are governed by the few". The implicit meaning is clear.

Are we listening?

What should we anticipate?

An interview with Collins quotes her saying, "The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question "real or not real" seems more pressing everyday."

Collins has made it clear numerous times that her books are inspired by real-life events, which is why they can feel so relatable. She doesn't shy away from the ugliness of humanity; instead, she draws attention to it. Geez, I wonder what dark elements she'll highlight this time?

Fans are already speculating that the perspective will be told from 16 y/0 Haymitch, but since we already know so much about it, including the twist ending in how he wins, they contemplate multiple points of view.

Who are the potential alternate characters?

The main theory is Katnis' mom's best friend, as she's one of the tributes selected that year. We also finally get to meet the famous Mr. Everdeen, Katniss' dad. As interesting as it may be to have another Everdeen narrating the events, I don't think it'll happen. His restriction to District 12 offers a limited angle on the Games.

My guess is that since Collins is hinting at propaganda, most of the story will take place behind the scenes in the Capital.

The notion that Snow might have a perspective is dismissed since Collins already gave him an entire book, but we might experience the Capitol through the eyes of another character. Maybe the Game Maker? Or the Hosts we love to hate? Whoever it is, they'll be a fundamental part of the Games and, therefore, integral to the storyline.

Alright, so, we have (most) the key players, we know the outcome, and we know the stakes... what does that leave?

Personally, I think it's the system. It's the one thing we only have a basic understanding of. We're aware of the corruption, but how deep does that corruption go, and what would revealing it cost Snow?

Easy: the collapse of his empire.

Haymitch knows a lot more about the politics than he reveals to Katniss, which is how he's able to slyly manipulate the strings of fate from the sidelines. It's assumed he's so skilled because he's been a mentor for so long. But what if it's more than that? What if he discovered something monumental during his time in the Capital?

Before anyone discards that idea, remember, his entire family and girlfriend were killed because he brought attention to the force field around the arena. He made an enemy of Snow by exposing this weakness. That'd be enough to silence anyone.

And no, I don't think the force field is the big discovery. Remember, propaganda is Collins' not-so-subtle clue.

A major quality of Haymtich's character is that he's brilliant and underestimated. We need to give him the credit he's due. This discovery represents his winning hand, and he is prepared to sacrifice his instant need for vengeance and wait for the perfect opportunity because timing is everything (another theme Collins likes to emphasize).

He's finally able to put that knowledge to use with Katniss because she's the first with the potential to win and gains the support of the many. It makes sense. Why waste his only advantage on unpromising candidates?

But how did Haymitch stumble upon the crack in the foundation holding the entire operation together? Better yet, how did he know how to dismantle it?

Likely with inside help.

I anticipate Collins will disturb us with something unforeseen, strike us with enlightenment, and force us to reflect on our reality. One thing to remember is nothing is ever surface level when it pertains to the Hunger Games. Can we survive it?

I guess we'll know next year.

And when that time comes, may the odds ever be in our favor.

Ah!!!!! I saw this too and am also over the moon!!! I read the newest one this fall and just watched the movie last night!!! Sooooo good!!! I am also a huge Hunger Games Fan!!! When I found out it was announced that this one would be around the 50's quarter quell, my poor husband had to listen to all my fan theories and thoughts from things I'd read before this announcement!!! Like how we know that double the tributes will be selected, as well as this is the year Haymitch "wins" (I also don't believe in anyone actually winning these games but that's another discussion to be had)... Like the reason he's so hated because they wanted Kaniss' mom's friend to come back and not him! Like ahh!! So many crazy details to think about!! Also, I didn't see much mention of Coriolanus Snow... I wonder where he is in her career now that it's been 40 years since we last saw him... 🤔

  • Gosh I'm like so dumb. I don't know why but I was picturing Maze Runner until you mentioned 12 districts and that's when I realised how dumb I was. I've not watched or read Hunger Games but I know how excited you are hehehehehe
