A Coven of Chaos

After a number of tongue-in-cheek title changes, and, like many projects, a few Strike related delays, the first trailer for WandaVision spin-off Agatha All Along has arrived, with the first two episodes of the series itself dropping on Disney Plus on September 18.

After breaking free from the spell placed on her by Wanda Maximoff in the final episode of WandaVision to find herself powerless, Agatha forms a coven to accompany her on the magical gauntlet of the Witches' Road. Anyone who survives the challenges and reaches the end of the Witches' Road alive is said to be granted their greatest desire.

Diving back into the magical side of the Marvel universe, the series is set to introduce a few known magical figures from Marvel comics, as well as a few characters unique to the show. Let's take a look at the major players in Agatha All Along.

Agatha Harkness

Agnes, Wanda and Vision's nosy neighbour in the sitcom world of Westview, was eventually exposed as Agatha Harkness, a centuries old witch seeking to discover the details of Wanda's spell, and eventually drain her chaos magic powers. After Wanda outwits and defeats Agatha, she traps her in Westview in her Agnes persona.

After Wanda's supposed death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Agatha is freed from the spell, seeking to regain her lost powers. Some fans believe Agatha All Along may herald the beginning of a redemption arc for the character, who in the comics, errs more towards shades of grey on the morality scale than the MCU's Agatha has been portrayed so far.

'Teen'/Billy Kaplan

Joe Locke, previously best known for his role as Charlie Spring in Netflix's Heartstopper, is set to make his MCU debut in Agatha All Along, playing a goth teenager eager to enter the Witches' Road. He is said to function as a human Familiar, aka a being who exists to protect and guide witches, thus explaining his value to Agatha and her new coven.

While some sources simply list Locke's character mysteriously as 'Teen', most agree that the character is most likely Billy Kaplan, a character who in the comics, is host to the reincarnated soul of Wanda Maximoff's son, Billy Maximoff. Kaplan has the magical ability to speak his wishes into existence, along with chaos magic and the various powers that come with it, and was a founding member of the Young Avengers as Wiccan.

While Billy's status as a Familiar in Agatha All Along may lead Agatha to initially view him as simply a means to an end, the possibility that she may develop genuine affection for the teenager could aid in her potential redemption. In the comics, Agatha acted as Nanny for Wanda's baby twins.

Rio Vidal

Fan favourite actress Aubrey Plaza will play Rio Vidal in the series. The MCU's first Green Witch, Rio was initially described as the series villain, however, recent cast listings refer to her as a warrior and member of Agatha's coven. Both may be true. It is possible that Rio has her own reasons for travelling the Witches' Road, and will be happy to let the rest of the coven be canon fodder along the way.

Thanks to her status as a Green Witch, some fans believe Rio Vidal may be a gender-flipped adaptation of the Emerald Warlock, a villain from the 2016 'Scarlet Witch' comic run.

Recent rumours suggest that Plaza is already signed on for at least one future MCU project, possibly reuniting her with Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch. Plaza and Olsen previously worked together on the 2017 Instagram-themed Black Comedy Ingrid Goes West.

Jennifer Kale

Former Saturday Night Live star Sasheer Zamata will appear in Agatha All Along as Jennifer Kale, a Sorceress. Zamata has expressed a fascination with witches, performing jokes based on the subject in past stand-up comedy shows, taking inspiration from Kristen J. Sollee's book Witches, Sluts and Feminists: Conjuring the Sex Positive.

Jennifer Kale is a recurring character in Marvel Comics, often in titles featuring Man-Thing or Doctor Strange. A member of the cult of Zhered-Na, much of Kale's magic use is drawn from their ways, although she has expanded her repertoire by accepting mentorship from others, including Strange.

Lilia Calderu

Beloved veteran actress Patti Lupone will appear in Agatha All Along as a 450 year old witch named Lilia Calderu. A more reluctant recruit to Agatha's Coven if the trailer is anything to go by, Lilia's main skill is in Divination, aka predictions of the future.

Proving the show is deep diving into Marvel history, Lilia Calderu is a rather obscure character from the comics, appearing mostly in a few early Doctor Strange stories.

Alice Wu-Gulliver

Actress Ali Ahn will play Alice Wu-Gulliver, another witch recruited into the coven.

In the comics, Alice Gulliver is the daughter of Detective Adam Gulliver, and the August Wu of Coral Shore, a magical guardian of Hong Kong. After her parents' deaths, Alice inherits her Mother's role as a guardian of Hong Kong, while also following in her Father's footsteps as a Detective, mostly using magic to enhance her weapons.

Alice, also known as 'The Wu', becomes a friend and ally of Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, during the 2016 'Scarlet Witch' comic run.

Sharon Davis

In Agatha All Along, Debra Jo Rupp reprises her WandaVision role as Sharon Davis, a resident of the town of Westview, New Jersey. She was cast as Mrs. Heart in Wanda's sitcom world.

While Agatha All Along's cast list refers to her as a witch, this doesn't seem to have been the case in WandaVision. Some fans theorise that she may have been roped in by Agatha simply to bring the coven's membership up to seven, a powerful number in magical circles.

The Scarlet Witch?

The apparent death of Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, triggers the plot of Agatha All Along. However, many fans doubt whether the character is actually dead. A growing theory suggests that she may actually be in hiding on the Witches' Road. This would fit with some areas of the road acting as a haven for troubled witches in the comics, and has been boosted by several shots of stained fingers, similar to Wanda's when Darkhold corrupted, in Agatha All Along's trailer.

We'll have to wait until the series hits screens in September to find out the truth!
